Win 7 Backup Error causing Blue Screen, please help!
Alright, here's the deal. I just upgraded my HP computer from Vista to Win7 Home Premium through the free upgrade program that came with my computer. I went through the process as the directions stated. Thought everything went well until I hooked up my Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1.5TB external HD to run Windows Back up. Everytime I try to run Windows Backup, it almost completes and then I get the error code 0x80070002 'cannot find file'. I does not tell me what file it cannot find or anything. Also what happens is the system becomes ridiculously slow. When I try to restart of shut down the system, I get a blue screen. Here is the information that I get after the restart from blue screen: Problem signature: Problem Event Name: BlueScreen OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3 Locale ID: 1033 Additional information about the problem: BCCode: 116 BCP1: FFFFFA80083904E0 BCP2: FFFFF88004AE3490 BCP3: 0000000000000000 BCP4: 0000000000000002 OS Version: 6_1_7600 Service Pack: 0_0 Product: 768_1 In addition, if I try to just transfer files over to the external HD, it becomes slow like when the backup error occurs and I get a blue screen when I attempt to restart or shut down. It has happened five times now. I don't have the debug software on my computer to read the .dmp files. I am by no means an expert with computer, but I can get by if someone can give me some directions to go about how to fix the problem. Thank you!

Not sure if this post will help:http://www.technologyquestions.com/technology/windows-vista/217638-system-cannot-find-file-specified-0x80070002.htmlI googled around and it seems that allot of people started having this problem with Windows Vista (Yes i know you are not on Vista but it is probably the same bug affecting both operating systems).Others were not able to run a backup until they ended up dong a clean install as opposed to a upgrade. Which i know, isn't much help since you figure an upgrade SHOULD make things work just fine.

plcalderaz, Forgive me, I forgot to mention I had already checked the registry error to ensure the profile paths were correct. I had no issues with Vista doing backups for 2 months, it has only started with the upgrade to Win7 Home Premium. Also would the reg problem also effect just "drag and drop" copying to the external hard drive?

Hi, I would like to confirm if the blue screen occurs every time the backup runs. To troubleshoot this issue, please refer to the following steps: First, I suggest checking if the issue occurs if you backup to another location other than this hard drive. You can also perform the following steps: 1. Click the Start button, type CMD in the Start Search box. 2. Right click on CMD and choose Run as administrator. 3. Type the following command and press Enter: fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\ If the issue persists, please upload the dump file to the http://skydrive.live.com/ using your Live ID and I will check it.Vivian Xing - MSFT

Hi, According to the dump file, the BSOD was caused by nvlddmkm.sys which is the NVIDIA driver. Please update your Motherboard, BIOS and device driver to the latest version. In addition, please check if this solution works. Hope it helps.Vivian Xing - MSFT

Vivian, Thank you for your help, updating the NVIDIA driver did resolve the BSOD issue. However the error 0x80070002 is still occurring whenever I try to use Backup and Restore. Also when I drag and drop files into my external hard drive, it stalls out after about ten seconds. How do I go about resolving this issue? Is there a way to find out what "file" that isn't being found during transfer? Thank you again for all your help.

Hi, It seems that the BSOD and the backup are two different issues. I suggest that we split them into different threads to better understand the problem & reply for all community members, which will also make the whole thread clearer, concise and fast the reply for your reference. Thank you. Vivian Xing - MSFT

Hi, Could you please mail me the logs from your machine? You can find them under C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsBackup\WindowsBackup.*.etl Zip them together and send them across to: sankalpm_AT_micro[opposite of hard]_DOT_com That'll help me diagnose the exact cause for Backup failure on your machine. Thanks, Sankalp [MSFT]
