Win 7/Win 7 workgroup sharing problem
This does *NOT* involve Vista, XP or a server. This does *NOT* involve a domain. I have multiple machines in a workgroup environment. All machines are able to connect to shared directories and printers except there is one machine that will not let anybody connect to it by double clicking the icon in the network neighborhood. For the other machines, when I click on their icons I get a list of printers and directories that are available, but on this one machine (7 home premium 64 bit) I am told there is no access. If I drop to a command prompt and enter a net use s: \\machine\share command then it *DOES* map the share, but that does not help me connect to a shared printer. Another oddity - on one machine I can see the computer in the network neighborhood (but can't connect), but on another machine I can't see it in the network neighborhood but it DOES show up on the full network map. One other oddity (not sure if this is related) but this is the only machine that won't remember the credentials to connect to a folder shared on a 2003 server machine. I've mapped the drive both by net use with the /persistent switch and through the "remember my credentials" checkbox, and even edited the credital manager entry but every time I boot I have to enter the share's username/password again.

Hello A.Clawson, Thanks for your post. From your post, I suspect the problematic Windows 7 client doesn’t allow folder and printer share. To check this, please use the following steps: 1. On the problematic Windows 7 client, navigate to Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center. 2. In Network and Sharing Center, click Change advanced sharing settings on the left pane. 3. In the Advanced sharing settings page, please expand the network type involved in this issue. (Home and Work type, I suppose.) 4. Confirm that Turn on file and printer sharing is checked. Thanks. Turn on file and printer sharing *IS* checked. If I map a drive to a shared folder from a command prompt on the remote machine (net use q: \\whatever\...) I can connect without difficulty. It is only double clicking on the icon in the network neighborhood that does not work.
