WinXP machines cannot see Win7 RC machine
I cannot get any of my XP machines to see my Win7 RC machine on the same network and cannot share the printer on the Win7 machine. I have everything enabled (that I can find anyways) for file and printer sharing.

I just replied to another query where the win 7 couldn't see xp computers on a network. That's the problem I had with everything turned on the way I thought it should be. I turned off my win 7 firewall, let it discover the xp computers, turned the firewall back on again, and everybody saw each other on the the network. Seems kind of clunky and maybe I inadvertently did something else but I finally got my network up and running.

If you have Windows 7 on a HomeGroup then only other participants in HomeGroup (Vista and Windows 7 only) will see you. If you want others to see you and for you to see them you need to take Windows 7 (or Vista) out of the HomeGroup.

Turning off and turning on the firewall allowed me to see one of the XP computers on my network but not the other. What gives?

It is most likely caused by XP having dementia. It's an 'old' son-of-a-____.

The Win 7 default workgroup is "WORKGROUP" - once I found that out I just went through the normal XP home-network setup and changed it from "MSHOME" to "WORKGROUP". Restarted both machines and it worked fine.

Thank you so much cartamorte, that is the answer that works. My XP machines can now see the Win7 machine. Great work and thanks again.

Oddly enough, after several reboots for other reasons I now see both the XP computers. Next up: Change the network names on the XPs from MSHOME to WORKGROUP...
