WinSFX32 Self Extractor for Win32 requiring elevated privleges
A client is downloading .exe files from a printer manufacturer that contains firmware ugrades in a compressed format to Windows 7 Professional machines. The end-user(s) downloading these files are "standard users" on the Windows 7 PCs. The PCs are domain joined. When the WinSFX32 is launched, it is requesting elevated privileges to run and extract the compressed files. Since the OS is Win 7 Professional, AppLocker is not an option. I have looked at using Software Restrcition Policies (Path), but not have had any success. How can I configure a standard user to allow to run these executables? Details of a typical file are as follows: Description: WinSFX32 Self Extractor for Win32 File Version: 2.16.4.8 Product Name: WinSFX32 for Win32 Copyright: (c)Micco 1997-2001 All rights reserved Original filename: WINSFX32.EXE Thanks in advance!!!

what's the name of the exe? Something with setup.exe or install.exe? In this case Windows wants admin permission. Does the exe work with standard user rights? "A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

C650_A00H0Y0-F000-G00-R6.EXE is the executable's file name. I also have a file C650_A00H0Y0-F000-GW6-R6.exe that the file decription is "Win32 Zip Self-Extractor" (as opposed to WinSFX32 Self Extractor for Win32 - as above) which only asks me "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?" I select Run and the program runs ( asks for a folder to extract contents to...) WITHOUT a UAC prompt. It appears two separate utilities were used to compress and create the self-extracting files? So why does the Win32 Zip and the WinSFX32 files behave differently? Winzip is NOT installed on the testing workstation. How do I get the WinSFX32 .exe to behave similarly to the Win32 Zip .exe?

How do you download them? With the IE? The IE adds zone data to the downloaded files and marks them as downloaded from the Internet. That's why you have to accept "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?" message. Won't make a difference. THey were downloaded from site in Trusted, Internet and Intranet zones. THe difference is onlyt the utility used to compress then WinSFX32 v. Win32 Zip. THe former wants elevation, the latter does not. I need determine how to remove the elevation requirement from the WinSFX 32 type.

The version is from 2001, so it is very old. Maybe the Program compatibility service of Windows 7 detects the old date and SFX in the description and requests admin rights. Try to stop the service and look if this makes a difference. "A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/
