Hello I need some directions on this problem.

I have build a custom PE Image containing a lot of extra packages like powershell and Dell utilities for configuring hardware. Through some command line menus the user can choose which kind of image he wants to apply and those scripts will try to make all the deployment and even hardware and bios configuration. Those images are WIM files and this works really fine.

But now we need to add a bare metal restore tool into the soup. I've checked the "windows way" of doing things and wbadmin is the right tool to make those backups while the system is alive. The thing is there is no wbadmin tool on the WinPE 5.1 media or any other CAB we tried. The information available is a mess and I have no idea on why such basically useful tool isn't included on the WinPE solution.

I also tried the Deployment Tools but there was no wbadmin on the generated image. I tried mixing with DaRT but the only thing I got was an extra menu with some very specific tools to fix problems.

- Is there a sane and clear answer about why wbadmin is not present or was removed from Windows PE?

- Is it possible to include it?

- What is the clear way for bare metal recovery? I don't want to have to deliver a separate media just for restoring backups.

i don't think wbadmin could work under WinPE. WinPE is a limitted operating system, most of the features or functions would not work under WinPE.

There would be backup and restore tools available in WinRE.wim file.
