Win7 user changed/script registry values/changes disappearing after unexpected shutdown
Hello all, I have been writing some validation automation and in the process I set some registry values to try to call myself back if an unexpected reboot occurs. In the first part of my script I set a password on the admin account (then set the values in the registry for it to auto log me in). After that I set the HKLU runonce key to call my script. If I do a friendly reboot everything works as expected. But if I test the case where I get an unexpected reboot, I seem to revert back to a totally different period if time and none of my regitry values are there, I don't do my runonce, and I think sometimes run an older runonce which may have previously existed. If I do this unexpected shutdown in Vista or XP it works as expected, but for Win7 it is not. It almost seems as if my changes are cached and not commited and when the unexpected shutdown occurs I lost my changes. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Any suggestions what is going on? Can I force my changes to be committed to the registry? by unexpected shutdown, I am removing the power from the system then rebooting. thanks, chris

Looks more like a problem for the developer forums. No problem. I have my machine set with no password and the UAC off so it starts right up for me. I am the only user and this makes the machine more useful as I am not nagged by this or that button. Windows 7 has changed the startup behavior considerably so you run once might not work fine. It depends on the problems found when the machine is powered down properly or not. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! IT/Developer, Windows/Linux/Mainframe RaidMax Smilodon, 680W, Asus M2NBP-VM CSM, AMD X2 4200+, 2GB DDR2-800, HD2400 Pro, more details on my site, need a new boot disk, existing one is 5 years old

Hello,Can you upload your script file to skydive and post the link here? I am glad to help you check and test the script in my PC. Thomas77

Hello Vegan Fanatic, I didn't think about posting it in the developer forums, but you are right that might have been a better forum. The systems my script will run on is using the true administrator account, so I don't need to worry about UAC or anything. Actually the account doesn't have a password, but since I am using task scheduler I set a password temporarily on the account, to ensure the scheduled tasks run reliably, and once I am done I remove the password again. Thus I set reg values for auto login in case the system is rebooted. This is leading me to where my problem is. I guessed that the startup behavior was indeed diferent in Win7, especially for the unexpected shutdown, but so far haven't been able to find any details about it in my searches. Might anyone have any information on this, which might help me understand what is going wrong. thanks, chris

Hi Thomas_77, My script is written to fit into a validation frame work which is used in my lab, but I can probably create a cut down version just doing the commands to demo the issue. Unfortunately I probably can't do this until tomorrow at the soonest. But I can build it and post it, and I appreciate the offer to help test it. thanks, chris
