Win7 upgrade form Vista Ultimate - network access issue
I upgraded from vista ultimate SP2 (32 bit)to Win7 Ultimate (32 bit). It was a clean install. I have brought WIN7 to current patch levels. My issue is the network icon in the system tray shows "x" a =with the description "not connected to any network" In Control panel, I show a normal connection to the Internet. However, my web browsing is a crawl and Windows Live Messenger seems to lose connection and must re-connect. The Vista networking was rock solid and I have not changed any external network connections form that. What is the cause of this icon and performance. THXJohn Lenz

Hi John, Before moving on, I would like to confirm that if you are using the PPPoE connection type. And please let me know if the red X is still on the network icon on system tray when the connection is established. First, I suggest going to update the chipset (motherboard) and bios to test. If the issue persists, please run the Network troubleshooter. Also, you may take the following suggestions to troubleshoot the issue: 1. Temporarily disable Firewall and third party antivirus program on the computer for a test. 2. Please test this issue in Clean Boot. 3. Update or reinstall the NIC driver and update the router’s firmware. 4. Refresh a new IP address ------------------------------------------ a. Click the Start Button, type "cmd" (without quotation marks), in the search result list, right click on Cmd.exe and select Run as administrator. Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue. b. In the popup window, type the following commands and press Enter one by one: ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew Then, the new IP address will be obtained. If the issue persists, please proceed to the next steps. 5. Configure the connection to obtain an IP address automatically: ---------------------------------------------------------- a) Click "Start", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotation marks) to Start Search bar and press "Enter". b) Right-click the network connection and click "Properties". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. c) Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" and click "Properties". d) Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". e) Click "OK". f) Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and click "Properties". g) Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". h) Click "OK". i) Reboot the computer. Meanwhile, I would appreciate your help in clarifying the following: 1. Is this a domain network and is there an ISA server on it? 2. The topology of the network. If the computer is connecting to a router, please bypass it and connect to the network directly for a test. 3. If there are any other computers on the network, do they also meet this issue? Sabrina, I ran your steps to no avail. The Linksys router was bad and I replaced it. Internet speeds now correct. Meanwhile, I would appreciate your help in clarifying the following: 1. Is this a domain network and is there an ISA server on it? SBS2008 domain, Symantec Endpoint firewall 2. The topology of the network. If the computer is connecting to a router, please bypass it and connect to the network directly for a test. Still has the problem 3. If there are any other computers on the network, do they also meet this issue? Win7 32 bit is OK (clean install) and I just installed Win7 Enterprise (64 bit clean install) with no problems. It appears to be a part of the upgrade from vista ultimate to Win7 ultimate Any thoughtsJohn Lenz

Hi John, Thank you for updating the status of our issue. From your description, I understand that after the bad Linksys router is replaced, our network issue was resolved. Considering this issue is only occurring when upgrading from Windows Vista Ultimate system to Windows 7 Ultimate while it works properly when clean installing the Windows 7 system, I suspect this issue can be caused by the incorrect network settings or the NIC driver was not installed correctly after upgrading from Windows Vista. You may reconfigure the network settings and make sure all the drivers are installed correctly to troubleshoot this issue if it occurs next time. References: Why can’t I connect to a network? The speed issue is resloved with the replacement router. However, the icon remains an issue. I tried windows update and did not see a NIC update. I then went to the Intel site (system has intel MB) and installed the latest driver. Upon re-boot, the icon at start up shows a "circle" then goes to the "x". In Control panel; Netwrok and Sharing Center, it shows all connected. Any thoughts on why the "x"John Lenz

Sabrina, This system use to have 2 NIC but I Uninstalled a PCI card and am using the MB NIC. I wonder if there is residual 2nd NIC code in the OS when I upgraded to Win7 from Vista. Thanks for your helpJohn Lenz
