Win7 system crash
When I log into my computer everything looks fine, but once every hour or so I get a system error. The message comes up on a blue screen and says: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters. Check with your hardware vendor for any updates. Disable BIOs memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced startup options, and then select Safe Mode Technical information: ** stop: 0x0000008E (0x000001D, 0x8FFB929F, 0x8E6E6C44, 0x00000000) ** SYMEVENT.SYS - Address 8FFB929F base at *FFA1000, DateStamp 478bf054" Before I upgraded to the windows 7 RC build 7000 I was using Vista home edition and never got any errors. Any suggestions? Also, I downloaded directly off of microsoft.com and according to windows update all drivers and such are up to date. system specs: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T5750 @ 2.00GHz RAM: 3 GB 220 gigs free on the HDD

bstewar - Are you still using the Beta? If so, you might consider getting a copy of the RC (build 7100). It may fix the issue in question.

SYMEVENT.SYS is a part of Norton/Symantec protection software. Try uninstalling that program to see if the crashes go away. If they do, either install a fresh copy that's compatible with Windows7 or select another antivirus.- John

Hopefully that does the trick. When I hovered my cursor over the Symantec icon it said that it was malfunctioning. Stupid school required virus protection. Do you have a suggestion of a program that does work with windows 7? I normally use Avast!, but I hadn't gotten around to installing it on this computer yet.

I use Avira Free on my 32 bit Win7 tablet, and Avast Free on my 64 bit Win7 desktop. I've had no issues with them.- John

bstewar2, I'm so sorry to hear that you're having issues with your system crashing. I know how frustrating it can be. You might want to consult the windows 7 forum at microsoft.com/springboard, there may some information about compatibility with your system, please keep in mind, if your system was stable before, and you have the Vista Drivers they will work with Windows 7, so you may want to revert to them. Thanks, v-glferg@microsoft.com
