Win7 cannot access CD drive on XP PC across home network
Lots of info out there around getting Win7 and XP to talk, but can't find this specific scenario. My desktop PC with all my files and CD drives is running XP home SP3. My netbook PC is running Win7 starter edition, and I want to access various resources from my XP PC. I have no problem accessing hard disks - can share at root and see all files. But no matter what I do, I cannot access any of the 3 optical drives. I have shared each drive, and can see them all in Win7, but when I attempt to open any of them I get the common "You do not have permission to access..." message. I know someone else who has linked an XP desktop to an XP netbook without experiencing any problems at all, and has successfully used the desktop CD drive to install software to the netbook. Thanks in advance...

Hi, This issue mostly can be caused due to the incorrect sharing permission. I would like to suggest you perform the following steps to share the optical drive: Check the sharing permissions ============================= 1. Right click on the optical drive you want to share and click “Properties”. 2. Click “Sharing” tab and “Advanced Sharing” button. 3. Check “Share this folder” box, click “Permissions” button. 4. If “Everyone” is listed, please highlight it and check “Full Control” for “Allow”. 5. If “Everyone” is not listed, please click “Add” button, type “Everyone” and click “Check Name” and “OK” button. 6. After that, please repeat the Step 4. Does it work? Thanks for your response. My "Sharing" tab doesn't have an advanced sharing button. This is XP home where the optical drive is installed - I can only see the advanced option on my Win7 netbook. Is there some way of turning on advanced sharing in XP? I've looked around the control panel before and can't find anything... Thanks again.
