Win7 blocks access to folder on website
I help support a community volunteer group. On their website, hosted on a Server 2003 computer, they have a members only section. The pages for this section are stored in a members folder on the server with permission requiring an ID and password. The members only link presents a page with a login link and explanation of who can log in. Clicking on the link presents a login dialog box (in WinVista titled: Authentication Required; in Win7 titled: Windows Security). From WinXp and WinVista PCs, the login works. Hopwever, from Win7 PCs the login fails, merely re-presenting the login dialog box. The hosting ISP cannot explain why this happening. I've now tried access from several Win7 PCs: my own notebook, the group's office desktop, and another notebook. Under the ID and password fields, the login dialog box shows Domain: XXXXX (the Computer Name). I've tried accessing the login with Windows Firewall disbaled; my Internet security suite disabled; and IPv6 disabled (the hosting ISP's suggestions) all to no avail. I've also tried using IE8 and Firefox with the same result. I've also tried to use the FTP credentials (required to modify pages in the members_only section) to login with the same failure. PCs using OSs other than Windows 7 still login to the section of the web site; so my conclusion is that this is definitely a Windows 7 issue. Can anyone offer any suggestions on how/what to configure in Windows 7 to allow access of permission-based sections of a web site? The solution wiill need to be put into a form that beginners can implement as many of the group's members are elderly and not used to doing registry tweaks and the like.

Hi, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums. Please make sure the clocks are in sync on Win 7 and Win2003 boxes. If it does not work, please try the following methods: Browse to "Local Policies" -> "Security Options". Now look for the entry "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level" and open it. Click on the dropdown menu and select "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated". Apply the settings. In the Advanced sharing settings page of Network and sharing center, you need to have it set as Work/Home profile. Try -Enable network discovery -Turn on file and print sharing -Turn off password protected sharing -Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers The other settings such as encryption I have set as use 128 bit encryption. Please check related policies. 1. Enter “gpedit.msc” in the Start Search box. 2. Open “Computer Configuration”/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Settings. 3. In the right pane, enable the following policies: Network access: Allow anonymous SID/name translation Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users Also please disable the following policies. Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares Good Luck. Hi Magon, Thanks for the follow-up. I spoke with the hosting ISP server administrator on your first suggestion about clocks being in sync. He agreed this can be a problem and was going to double check the server clock. As he did not say this fixed it when he called me back I assume the server clock was correct (as is my Win7 notebook's). He then asked me to try the login using Firefox browser (I had told him I had the same failure to login using IE8 and Chrome). Firefox failed for me as well. Then he called back to say he had managed to login using Firefox, clicking the Cancel-button on the "authentication required" dialog and entering the id and p'wrd in the second dialog box which then appeared. I then tried IE8 and Chrome again, using the Cancel-button in the failure dialog box with both going to a failed page with the error: HTTP 401.1 - Unauthorized: Logon Failed Internet Information Services I then tried the same process with Firefox and succeeded in logging in. At this stage, the server administrator at the hosting ISP is trying to work out why the two attempts are required in Firefox and IE and Chome always fail. As soon as I hear back from him, I'll post the result here. I'm trying to avoid the significant changes to Win7 client you suggested as the majority of the Community group's members are elderly and would just give up using the web site if asked to make those changes to their own Win7 PCs; or even being told they have to use Firefox and try twice to login. Thanks for your continued help. I'll post back soon.
