Win7 and Server 2000
I have a home network, with several XP machines accessing data, etc. off a Server 2000 machine. Every machine in the workgroup has a distinct name, but logs into the server as "administrator" with a common password. While the new WIN7 laptop can access all of the XP public folders and is in the Workgroup, it will not log into the Server 2000 machine where all the data is kept in several RAIDS. The message I get when I try to log in is “Logon failure: Unknown user name or bad password.” I use Administrator and the common password which works on all other machines. Any time I’ve added an XP machine, all I’ve needed to do is join the workgroup and log in. WIN7 and Server 2000 have a communication issue somewhere that I cannot figure out. What I’ve done: 1. On the Server 2000 machine, I've enabled "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated". 2. I’ve upgraded WIN7 from Home to Ultimate. I upgraded, I did not fully reformated and reinstall. 3. I’ve joined the existing workgroup. 4. I have no HOMEGROUP set up. 5. I have the following on: Network discovery, file and printer sharing, media streaming, public folder sharing, Enable 40-56 bit encryption. 6. I’ve turned off password protected sharing. 7. In HomeGroup connections I’ve enabled use user accounts and passwords, instead of allowing windows, but don't have a home group set up at this time. The WIN7 build is Version 6.1 (Build 7600) I'm at my wits end, as I can find no reason for these two machines not to talk. Suggestions? Thanks in advance, Jack EDIT: My server can access the WIN7 public folders, but won’t allow the WIN7 machine to access the date on it.

It sounds like the same problem as with NT domains. See KB940268 @ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940268 See this thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itpronetworking/thread/c196c366-bf95-4bdf-8832-62ea2e9bf0ae See also: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7network/thread/95ea464b-5522-42f6-bfac-f56244089b4d

Hi, Besides above suggestions, please also enable Guest account on Windows 2000 and assure the password is empty, and then try to access Windows 2000 machine from Windows 7 for a test. Thanks, Novak
