Win7 X64 internet access but no update service, please help me.
Please help me, I have tried everything. I installed Win7 x64 on a fresh drive. Once installed, I could browse the internet but applications that required the internet couldn't. These applications were Windows update, which couldn't check for updates, Norton360 , with the same problem, and the Live installer couldn't download installation files. You can download files from internet explorer but not from an application. I decided to try update the drivers manually to fix the problem but the device manager can't use the net. I went toMicrosofts driver catalogue site but it uses a program to download drivers, it doesn't download direct from explorer so had the same problem. I reinstalled but didn't install anything this time, not even nortonand had the same problems again. At this point I didn't know what else to try, I thought that if I upgraded my existing Vista x64, then it should use the existing drivers and maybe fix the problem. That was very foolish as now I have no operational O/S as it has the same problem as the previous installs.I read a post of someone that couldn't update on this site, he said he fixed it by reconfiguring his DSL, I have a ADSL router, and it is connected to my pc via ethernet, so this isn't possible on my machine (unless I misunderstood), I don't know if he had internet anyway, his discription wasn't all that in depth. Please help me, I will try anything at this point.I am going to try the x86 version see if thats the same, I will update this post at that point, but I will still have a x64 installed so please do reply. Thanks, Phill.

I would think it was the Norton 360 Firewall doing that.Rating posts helps other users Mark L. Ferguson MS-MVP

Thanks for your reply, but no, as stated, I installed it again without installing anything but windows, and the same thing happened. I have since writing the post, installed the x86 version and that behaves in the same manner.

You've probably checked this already, but I'll ask anyway... as far as 'Windows' services, do you have BITS and Automatic updates turned on?Also, have you checked your IE settings to make sure that there isn't some setting which is preventing you from downloading ?Just a few random thoughts... sorry if they are not helpful.
