Win7 Ultimate shuts off unexpectedly
Hi, For about a month now, while loading windows 7, the computer will just shut off. The only events logged are a critical Kernal-pwoer event id 41. It will either shut off while loading windows, at the log in screen, or shortly after logging in. Sometimes, upon re-boot, it will bring up "start up repair" screen, I run that and it always works. Sometimes, it does not bring up the start up repair screen, and goes to the safe mode option screen. Choosing "start windows normally" will usually result in the same shutting off sequence. When this happens, I do the same thing over and over again, and it will eventually stay on like normal. Sometimes, it will work the 2nd try, 1st try or 15th try. I have no clue what it could be. I put in a new PSU, re-compunded the heat sink and replaced the RAM. What could the problem be? Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate AMD 3800+ 1gb ram 160gb baracuuda HDD Joe

Why cripple your system with 1 gig of ram. What speed is your ram running at...?

HDD has been replaced, that was one of my first guesses, I cloned the old disk and broght it over using EZ0-GIG II. chkdsk has been run multiple times, as well as a few third party apps, registry cleanser (regclean). Regclean always find errors, but just like missing associations and stuff. RAM is PC5300, MoBo will only hold 2gb, but don't have the $ to get it.

Hi Joe, When did the issue first occur? Did it occur after changing certain hardware? If so, please install the latest driver for the hardware device and see if the issue can be resolved. If the issue persists, please go into Safe Mode (Restart computer, press the F8 key when the boot menu pops up, select [Safe Mode], and boot up) and check if the issue still occurs. Also, unplug all unnecessary devices and then perform the following steps: 1. Click Start, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Search bar and press Enter. 2. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers". 3. Right click on your sound card and then click "Properties. 4. In the dropdown menu of Device Usage, please choose "Do not use this device (disable)" and click OK. 5. Please use the same method to disable other dubious hardware such as: internal modem, network card and CD-R drive. Please note some devices such as video adapter are not available to be disabled. If the issue still exists, to solid troubleshoot this kind of kernel crash issue, we need to debug the crashed system dump and analyze the related source code if needed. Unfortunately, debugging is beyond what we can do in the forum. I'd like to recommend that you contact Microsoft Customer Support Service (CSS) for assistance so that this problem can be resolved efficiently. To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a look at the web site listed below: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;PHONENUMBERS If you are outside the US please see http://support.microsoft.com for regional support phone numbers. Hi Linda, Thank you for your through response. I tried disabaling the hardware you listed systematically, one at a time, then cobonations of that and all off to no avail. The system still shuts off sporatically. I have swapped the HDD and did a fresh install of Win7 and the problem still occurs. There doesn't appear to be a crash dump anywhere, because it's not like the system blue screens, it just turns off. The phone number page you list does not exist, also, I can only call if it is free. Any other suggestions would be helpful. Joe

That phone number page comes up okay for me.I would suspect your hardware has a fault. Check your fans; the system may be powering down to prevent damage from overheating.-Noel

Mine is doing the same thing. Sometimes it runs for days then the next week it shuts downe as soon as I start it. I can always get into safe mode except one time. It is not over heating because it happens as soon as it is powered on. ran dell diag for 27 hours and it did not shut down and everything passed. All drivers are up to date. This machine ran Windows xp fine. have tried both 32 and 64 bit windows 7, same results.
