Win7 Ult X64 Backup 0x81000031
I've done a quick search on this, tried the fixes listed by the MS help site, and still nothing. I try to backup my C: Drive to my G: Drive (Which is connected via E-SATA) and it'll give me this error http://i40.tinypic.com/ibxmox.png I Linked to a picture of the error. I'd really like to use the built-in backup feature. As a side note, this is a clean install as of about 3 weeks ago.

Disk C: Is using about 50GB, Disk G: has 90GB free. I was able to get a backup to finally complete, but it was without any of my personal stuff, just a system copy.

Windows backup requires the destination, USB or server, to have 1.5x the capaccity of the system disk. So for a 500 GB C: drive, a 750 GB backup disk is needed etc. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! Is this also required if I am just wanting to make a backup of my personal files, and not a restore partition? I would rather just have a backup of my libraries than a bootable backup. I can always re-install, but I can't always just make my files re-appear. I've used Windows Backup with Vista before. I've got a 160GB internal, and my backup drive at the time was an 80GB USB drive, and it would backup fine. I don't think this is a space issue. Any other ideas?

The Wiindows backup tool with Windows 7 wants a bigger disk. Find a 300 GB USB disk and use that. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! IT/Developer, Windows/Linux/Mainframe Need a some parts finish the new server, see the site for remaining items needed

The backup utility doesn't tell me that I do not have enough space. It errors out with a a problem mentioning both Libraries and BitLocker (I have 2 custom libraries, but they're right no the C: drive, in my user folder) and I don't have BitLocker turned on. I still am not able to get a complete backup. I can backup as long as I choose between making a system image, or my own files, but I'd like to do both. I also only have a 160gb hdd as my largest external or internal drive.

I told you, the solution is a better USB disk. They are cheap so do not worry. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! IT/Developer, Windows/Linux/Mainframe Need a some parts finish the new server, see the site for remaining items needed

Problem is Cheap =\= free. and Free is what I can afford at the moment. Are you sure that it NEEDS a 300GB disk?
May 8th, 2010 5:56am

Well scrape it up somehow, the 300GB or bigger will help in the long run. a 500 GB disk can support incremental backups for a while too. Like I said, USB disks are cheap so hopefully its not a burden. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! I'm confidant that it doesn't require a 300gb disk to back up my files. I don't even have 160gb on this drive (and I make sure that it never gets that much either) It just makes no sense that it would require me to have 1.5 time the total storage of the drive, without it ever telling me such. I was able to set up the backup fine, and it even warned me that only 2 of my drives would work for it, because only 2 of the drives still have enough free space to "work". Problem is: it doesn't work. Have you looked at the picture I posted yet?

That error code is due to space problems. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! IT/Developer, Windows/Linux/Mainframe Need a some parts finish the new server, see the site for remaining items needed

I know you are uusing bitlocker, and that is one of the reasons for the error, but the space requirements still are needed. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! As I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, I do NOT have bitlocker turned on, but yet it still says something about BitLocker. I also just removed the custom Libraries, and still nothing. I've even followed the steps listed by MS and I get nothing.

Hi, I would like to confirm that can you backup to the local hard drive successfully? If all the troubleshooting suggestions the following link provides cannot fix the issue, I would like to suggest you verify the Volume Shadow Copy and Windows Backup services. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/975692?p=1 You may also check if the troubleshooting suggestions the following link provides are useful. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973455 Regards,Arthur Li - MSFT

Hi Arthur_Li, I cannot get the backup running right now, still giving me that error. All the services you listed are running, and neither of the articles you linked me to have resolved the problem. Any ideas? Thanks -Christian

Hi Arthur_Li, I cannot get the backup running right now, still giving me that error. All the services you listed are running, and neither of the articles you linked me to have resolved the problem. Any ideas? Thanks -Christian I suggest getting the free 7-zip and use that. It can make a zip file faster and smaller than Windows can and its free. I use it to backup "Documents" all the time. It takes very fast too. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! How can I set 7Zip to do a backup for me? I've been using 7Zip for a few years now and I've never seen a "backup" feature in it (Or, what i'm looking for: A scheduled backup)

I backup manually. If you need a scheduled one, then another choice is needed. Some archive tools have a command line feature and those can be leveraged more easily. I hardly change my files so I backup when I get around to it. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! Hi, This time, I would like to suggest you perform an In-Place upgrade to repair the system. In-place Upgrade ============ 1. Start the computer. 2. Insert the Windows 7 DVD in the computer's DVD drive. 3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate: a. If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now. b. If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps: b1. Click Start, click Run, type Drive:\setup.exe, and then click OK. Note Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive. b2. Click Install now. 4. When you reach the Which type of installation to you want? screen, click Upgrade to upgrade the current operating system to Windows 7. Regards,Arthur Li - MSFT
