Win7 Pro (64bit) using a Print Server on Win2003 Server Issue
We replaced an old winxp laptop with a new win7 Pro laptop. When we try to install a printer from the print server, it states that it cannot find the right driver, and then offers a dialog box to browse to the proper .inf file. I've install the windows 7 32-bit drivers on the print server (which is a Windows 2003 server), but we still get an error when we try to select the print from the print server list. Then I've downloaded the windows 7 64-bit drivers, but it won't install on the Windows 2003 server because it is a 32 bit system... I'm not sure how to get the Win7 Pro laptop to see the 64 bit drivers on the 32bit server... Do I need to create a 'shared folder' on the HP extracted drivers folder on the server, and point the laptop to that folder? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. jill

Is your Windows 7 system 64bit system? If so, I suggest you manually install the printer driver in the Windows 7 system and then add the share printer with the following steps. 1. Click Start, click Control Panel and double click Devices and Printers. 2. Click Add a Printer. 3. Select "Add a local printer". 4. Select "Create a new port". Choose "Local Port" as the type of the port. 5. In the box "Enter a port name", type the address as the following format. \\<IP address of the host computer>\<The Share Name of the printer> Then click Next. 6. Select the correct driver in from the driver list. If the required driver is not present, click the “Windows Update” button. After the update finishes, search for the proper driver again. Also you can include this printer driver into the printer server. To do so, on the Windows 7 computer, launch mmc.exe, then click File->Add/Remove Snap-ins, add Print Management. After clicking Next, in the “Add servers” box, enter the address of the printer server. Then, under Printer Servers->[server name]->Drivers, right-click and click “Add drivers”. Add the 64bit driver you just installed in the Windows 7 64bit system.Arthur Xie - MSFT

I tried this and it DOES NOT WORK. Window 7 will not let you use back slashes, \ , in the Port Name box. I tried using the mmc and the drivers appear to be installed on the Win2003 server however I still get an error 0x00000bcb when trying to install the network printer on my Win 7 client. Very frustrated at this point.
