Win7 - intermittent mouse stuttering issue
Hello, as per engineer's advice I am opening a separate thread on Win7 mouse stuttering problem here. Same issue as with others: both built-in and wired mouse cursor suddenly stops moving for a few seconds, then it restores its movement. I see no specific or firm correlation between network activity (wired or wireless, different networks). No correlation also between processor load and the issue, alas. It can happen on a desktop with a single application, let's say IE. The issue first occured almost immediately after installing fresh Win7 on a new computer. The MS engineer advised to uninstall and reinstall Flash; no change after that. Computer is Lenovo X201, Intel i5 CPU M 520 @ 2.40 Ghz, 4 GB of RAM, Win7 64 bit Enterprise. Luckilly, the computer is used for business purposes only so no casualties in fierce gaming, but the glitch is nevertheless annoying. Hope for some useful advice. Thanks.

Yes, I have had the same issue and not only does it stutter it also disappears and won't come back unless I re-boot. My computer is a brand new OEM Dell Optiplex 980 with Win7 Enterprise. MS please shed some light as to why this happens and how WE can fix it.

Please do these following steps to see if the same issue occurs: 1 Update BIOS, chipset and device drivers first, also open Event Viewer to check if any related system event is logged. 2 Boot in Safe Mode or Clean Boot. 3 Reinstall the driver of mouse. Hi Leo, I have updated BIOS etc. as requested above, but the issue persists both on the built-in tracking device and wired mouse. Event Viewer does not show any entries at the specific time when the cursor freezes. From the support forums I understand that it's a wide-spread issue across many platforms, and on the other hand it doesn't necessary appear on a similar HW config of some of my colleagues. I can only speculate it's something more related to the OS than to the platform. Is there any recommended next step I can take? Thanks.

I'm also experiencing this issue on a desktop machine. The stuttering is short and unpredictable lasting last then 5 seconds at random times. The system also makes an audible sound as if a device was unplugged and then plugged in again. I've checked connections and all are secure.

I think it's hopeless. The issue has been here for a year and two months at least (one of the threads started in Aug 2009, http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7performance/thread/01655e0a-1489-44e0-ad75-e9ee5486d91e#16a9b82b-746e-4815-9208-77239e8fc9ae). It's a Win7 x64 problem, and I don't believe anybody addresses it from the OS perspective. Quite sad.

This issue may occur if third party program affects the configuration or if the user profiles is corrupted. Let us perform a Clean Boot to check the cause of this issue first. Hi Leo, I postponed clean boot in order to try one more thing. Decided to turn off aero peek by disabling active themes. The stuttering was namely happening in the majority of the cases when I was hovering the cursor over the taskbar and previewing the windows. Interestingly enough the stuttering has been gone for the last 24 hours. Will updated this in a few days.

This is the solution! (At least for me.) 1. Disable active themes 2. By this, aero peek is turned off. No mouse stuttering since I've done that. Win7 lost some of the fancy look, though, but at least it works fine now. Is there a planned fix for active themes?

Hi, I am not sure if you have tried to update all the drivers listed on computer manufacture's website? I used to have similar strange questions on my Windows 7 machine, (for instance, flash player crashed instantly as soon as I maximize the flash window, the mouse cursor driver crashed from time to time, randomly).. I fixed them eventually by patching the drivers of chipset and bios. Maybe you can try the same thing? You should be able to obtain the drivers from lenovo's website.

Hmmm, interesting, never seen anything like this. Have you tried to change to other themes? Does it help? Or is it happened whenever aero effect is enabled?

My system is a 2600k Sandy Bridge, 16GB DDR3 1600 memory, OS on 64GB SATA 6 SSD, data on 3TB SATA 6 drive. System has Microsoft 6000 wireless keyboard/mouse. Video is nVidia GTX260 with latest drivers. Aero may have a small effect, but it is still there without aero thremes. Removing aero themes removes a good part of the Win7 user interface. This problem has been reported since the early Win7 betas and never fixed. Most of the Microsoft answers are, like those in this thread, non-responsive. There is a hotfix notice posted that describes a USB race condition where the lag causes wireless devices to lose their connection. That may or maynot be the cause of the problem, however the hotfix isn't readily available. It dates from November 2010, and should have been incorporated into an actual release by now. However, the hotfix notice hasn't been updated to show that. This lack of responsiveness reminds me of a Steve Balmer interview around 1990. In talking about the IBM-Microsoft relationship, he mentioned how productivity at IBM was measured in klocs (thousands of lines of code) rather than functionality. It would seem that Microsoft has fallen into the same trap.

I have been dogged by mouse stuttering, and I've also been frustrated by Excel 2010 hogging the processor. I've noticed that mouse stuttering tends to improve when Excell is not running (though I use Excel almost all the time). This morning, I tried this: 1. CTRL-ALT-DEL 2. Start Windows Task Manager 3. Select the Processes tab 4. Right click on EXCEL.EXE to open the context menu 5. Select Set Priority 6. Set to Priority to "Low" This seems to have reduced stuttering to a tolerable level without handicapping Excel performance much. To check, I set Excel's priority to "High", and the stuttering became extremely intolerable. I also tried selecting "Set Affinity" and limited Excel to using only one processor. This did not seem to make as big a difference, but I left it at that setting because Excel still performs satisfactorily (for me). I have Win 7 64 bit running on an HP desktop with dual core processer and 8 GB memory. Pete

Thank you.. Was looking for a fix for a while and this did it. I find it pretty ridiculous that I have a brand new, high powered PC and have to revert to an old look for the mouse to fucntion properly..this really should be addressed by Microsoft.

Ive been dealing with this problem for months now, and I finally found a solution that worked for me in another thread. It sounded crazy, but I was up for trying almost anything short of a reinstall. Hope it works for you as well. 1. Open up msconfig.exe (you can do this by typing it in search programs and files). It will make you enter the Admin password to open it. 2. Click on the boot tab. 3. Click on the Advanced Options button. 4. Ensure the number of processors matches what your machine actually has. (i.e. dual core=2, tri=3, quad=4, etc.) I have an AMD 3 core processor, but the number was somehow changed to 0. After changing it back to 3 and rebooting, I havent had the problem since. Like I said... I had been looking for a solution to this problem for months... I updated drivers, bios, changed usb ports, etc., etc., nothing worked for me except this. Thanks PapakSI! I've had this problem for over a year. I've tried almost everything but the only solution so far is not using Aero Themes. Every once in awhile I turn them on to see if Microsoft fixed the problem in an update but the stuttering returns. Do they even know there is a problem???

PapakSI, I've combed through forum after forum looking for a solution to my mouse stutter. I'm glad to hear you found a solution to your problem. However, it did not work for me. I posted the fix that did work for me (above), and now my system is running smooth as silk (with active themes enabled). With that being said, I don't think there is a silver bullet to this problem. What worked for you, what worked for me, may not work for the next guy. At least we are getting some of the solutions lumped together. Thanks for getting this thread started!

I have a quad core processor but for some reason this value was set to "1".

mine was set at 1 as well so I changed it to the 4 as I run a quad, I rebooted and the first thing it did was stutter twice :(

I have been dealing with this problem for a long time. I came across a message on another website which stated the user found a very fine piece of string/hair stuck to the bottom of the mouse. I didn't think much of this but I did inspect the bottom of my Razer Pro Solution mouse and did not find anything suspicious. I wiped the bottom with a clean cloth and then blew as hard as I could on the lens and area around. It has been almost 70 minutes since I did this and I have not heard the sounds or experienced the freezing mouse pointer. When I would experience the times where it remained frozen for more than a few seconds I would move around with the tab key and sometimes it felt that restarted the mouse. This feels like such a silly solution but in my case so far so good.
