Win7 - New User profiles are not working correctly, even after format/reinstall
We just put out a few machines last week and basically one user used it during that week. When a new user finally logged in, he had issues.
We eventually gave up, formatted, reinstalled Windows with the Dell CD and manually installed the apps, all Windows updates, etc. Same problem, different user. PC is on a domain, no fancy setups or strange problems
(Screenshots can be seen here:
http://imgur.com/a/I5xY9 )
When a new user (2nd+ user) logs in,
1.) Outlook gets the error The name cannot be matched to a name in the address list. Clicking OK, gives a popup
prompt asks for the server and mailbox name and for some reason is pre-filled with mail.omu.local which is wrong, and username of SYSTEM.
Before formatting, I could change this to the correct mail server address, and enter the users name to replace SYSTEM, and Outlook
would load. Now I get, The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action.
2.) Some
random activities cause Windows Explorer to crash. Example, Control Panel and clicking on Credential Manager causes instant crash of Explorer.exe.
3.) We have an internal app does not work
on this machine either (except under the first created profile). It launches and says Application cannot be started, contact vendor for more information. I can view details on this error which is in the screenshot. We've tried to directly run it from the
server, which doesn't work either.
I have no idea where to start troubleshooting next.

Have you used sysprep with copyprofile parameter?

Hi,
Did your machines installed with a standard image or deployed by a customized image?
I suggest to try to create a local administrator account and login to see if the same issue occurs.
I suspect the issue may related with domain account within AD. Or sysprep issue with profile.

It actually now seems to be random profiles. Not all subsequent profiles.
As of today, we've had 2 machines that have been working flawlessly. Shifts have changed and new users came in this morning (both had signed in the PC prior), both machines (Win7 x64) loaded with the "Best performance Win98" look, Black background. Empty Start
Menu(but will expand All Programs), Outlook just says "Outlook cannot be started", drive mappings said "access denied"...
They can log out, and there are still a few of us that load without a problem, it just seems like some are randomly going bad. To get them working again, I just deleted their user profile and started had them login, it loaded fine but not sure how long before
it goes bad again.
I'll have to research the "sysprep" and "copyprofile" thing.

Hi,
I suspect the issue may related with roaming profile on your domain.
Please temporary disjoin the domain and use a local user profile to login and see if the same issue occurs.

OK, some more information...
1. These PC's weren't setup with any existing images. Just out of the box, then joined on the domain, and software installed. The PC's that had issues at first were formatted and setup again. After more of the same problems, I downloaded the newest Win7ProSP1
ISO from MS and used it.
2. We took the trouble machine out, replaced it with another identical machine. The same 2 or 3 users used it without a problem for a week, and then shifts changed and a new user tried to login this morning... Same problem, black background, "performance"
look (non-aero), the Start Menu has Nothing in the left column other than All Programs at the bottom, and of course none of the programs will run.
I had of course logged in to setup the machine so my profile was already made on the PC, so I logged in to check it out again, and my profile had been corrupted as well. We still cannot figure this out!
Screenshot is what I'm describing in #2. Normally it should be the areo, stock Win7 background and look. There are 3 monitors which is why it's so large.

Hi ,
Any anti-virus application installed? If so, completely uninstall it for test.
If you create a new profile for this user, does it work?
If you change the user from domain to local, does it work?
Thanks.

We have SCCM/Endpoint Protection 2013. I would uninstall it IF there was a way to recreate the issue. It's random and happens 1-3 times/week. These are high-priority machines so uninstalling AV software may not fly, but I will see...
We can remove the user profile on the machine, make sure the folder is deleted under /Users, and have the user login just fine. That's what we've been doing to get them going again.
It's just totally random. The user may not have an issue for a week or two, so we cannot find a way to replicate the problem which is killing the troubleshooting process. It's random accounts at random times.
The user accounts and computer accounts in Group Policy are set up the same as all others. The only thing different is an in-house app, and ESRI 10.1
