Win2k Server Network Share Issues
Using Windows 7 Ultimate RC and trying to map network drives, etc... I can map drives to Windows XP computers, ie \\computer\c$ no problem so long as I have the same username/password on each computer I am connecting to. By the way, I have no domain controller, just workgroup type network... Anyways the XP computers can all map drives just fine to the Win2k server, but using Windows 7 to connect to a Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4 results in these security logs in the Win2k event viewer: The logon to account: username by: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0 from workstation: WIN7ULT failed. The error code was: 3221225578. Type: Failure Event ID: 681. This indicates a bad username or password but I know they are correct. 681 further would indicate the issue is in the Domain Controller where there is an invalid login with a domain account (again, not using a domain controller). I also tried forcing the computer name in the username box when it let me retry, no luck there either. ie COMPUTER\username and then the password. I also tried the net use command from a command prompt which should attempt a plain text mapping and no luck there either... net use [drive letter]: \\[member-servername]\[sharename] password /user:[domainname]\[domain-username] /persistent:YES - the error that comes back is "System error 86 has occurred. The specified network password is not correct." Also, probably related, when I use IE to try to connect to a website on the same server over the internet that is using directory security with usernames/passwords, then it keep rejecting the username and password as well. To get around this, I use firefox which might just be going the plain text route but Firefox works. This web issue is also occuring on Vista computers that are getting upgraded to IE 8. Once the auto updates get installed on the Vista computers then nobody can login to the website with IE anymore. I assume Windows 7 and Vista computers with IE 8 must be forcing a newer Kerberos authentication scheme or something new that is not recognized by the older computers... anyone know how to get around this?

Heck, if anyone out there has Windows 7 Ultimate RC (32-bit or 64-bit) and can make the claim they can map a drive to a Windows 2000 computer, PLEASE LET ME KNOW and post your results here.

Hey guys, I found a fix in a similar thread on Vista computers.... http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/iewebdevelopment/thread/9e56fa7c-e0c1-4930-9612-0ad5436ad9f3 go to the Local Security Policy --> Security Options and changed the LAN Manager authentication level properties to Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated. The default was set to: Use NTLMv2 response only. once I did that on my Windows 7 machine I could connect to my win2k network shares... it was set to undefined by default.

The solution above of setting the security policy to Send LM & NTLM worked for me with RC but I have installed the RTM version and that no longer solves the problem. I am using Window 7 Enterprise and cannot connect to shares on 2003 and 2000 servers that I was able to in the RC version and from all our other computers. I can even see the servers in my Network view but can't open them. I can see, open and connect to 2008 servers/shares.

Just installed Windows 7 64-bit retail a few days ago and then all of sudden I began having this problem again. Mapping drives to Windows 2000 Advanced Server was working fine, then about 3 days later, keep getting the password rejected again. Strange because the computers were on all night so didn't change any settings or reboot from the day before. Anyways, even with browsers such as Opera and Firebox trying to connect to the website I was getting HTTP 401.1 authentication errors, and the server is set for Basic Authentication. Windows 7 64-bit can connect to XP shares still at this point. I can Remote Desktop to the server as well. Anyways, when I went to:Local Security Policy > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options > Network securityI found it said:LAN Manager authentication level: Not Definedso I changed it to:Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiatedand everything works again. I should of checked to see what this setting was right after installing Windows 7, I wonder if something changed it, weird...

Hi brainlpb, I've been searching for a solution to this problem for over a week. I just happened on this thread and - BINGO - within 2 minutes I'm all up and running. I see the original thread was a year ago, so thanks for coming back and posting your update. Saved my bacon JR
