Win08 Sharing - The specified server cannot perform the requested operation
Get the following error when I try to connect to a Windows 7 Pro machine from Windows 2003 x64 sp2 DC: “\\Win7Pro is not accessible. You might have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.” After I get the above error I do not see any events in the event viewer. If I reboot the Windows 7 PC I can browse and connect to the shares for a time, sometimes it’s a couple hours sometimes a few days. The Windows 7 PC is running a virtual XP machine that has the same issue, not sure if it is part of the cause. Thanks,

This is a very similar thread - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/c51409c3-2174-46e1-8b5f-bf862c9a2a02/ Quoting useful text from the thread: "(ii) To access folders on Windows 7 machines, go to the folder's properties and click on the Sharing tab. Grant appropriate permissions as desired. Then, go to the Network and Sharing Center and click on Change advanced sharing settings on the left. Make sure: File and printer sharing is ON Public Folder sharing is ON Password Protected Sharing is OFF" Please revert back here if this does not resolve the issue. I am having the same issue. I attempted your solution but it did not work. I also looked at the other links that were referenced, and they did not help either. I have a Windows server 2003 R2 x86 Standard trying to access a shared folder I have setup on a Windows 7 pro x64 machine. I have verified that share is enabled with the appropriate permissions, and those permissions are set in the volume security tab as well. (for testing I have also added the everyone user with full control to both permission areas) It is in an AD domain and the user account trying to access the share is a domain admin. I can access the share from multiple other windows 7 or server 2008 machines, just not the Windows 2003 servers. The firewalls have been disabled and there is currently no AV firewall installed. I get the below exact error when trying to access \\computername “\\ComputerName is not accessible. You might have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.” And I get this error if trying to access the share directly using the UNC \\computername\sharename \\computername\sharename The specified server cannot perform the requested operation Any thoughts?

I’ve confirmed my has something to do with Windows XP Mode; until I start a virtual machine everything is fine then 2 hours 2 days I get that error message. Verified the shares are setup correctly and also tried disabling all firewalls and AV software. The only thing that seems to fix it is re-booting and NOT starting any virtual machines. If share permissions we not setup correctly in the first place it won’t work at ever. Thinking I should have asked this in the “Windows Virtual PC and XP Mode” forum.

Sorry I cannot help with your issue. The only Virtual machine that I run is to test out software before deploying, and that is on a test machine, so I don't have anything accessing it. I did just find the solution to my issue. The workstations that I am trying to access the shared folders on are part of an 80 machine render farm, which make them VERY hard to schedule a reboot. Apparently they had reached their max 20 incoming connections, so it was rejecting this request. I finally was able to pull one from production to do some real testing with and after the reboot it worked. Sometimes rebooting does fix the issue.... Does anyone know what service handles the incoming connections? I would love to restart the service rather than have to reboot all of these machines when this happens, although this does give me a great excuse to reboot these workhorses.

Hello, I got this *exact* error and found that if I restarted the Server service (and dependent Computer Browser), I was able to access the Windows 7 computer from the Windows 2003 computer. Note: I was able to access the Win7 computer from the 2003 computer with no problems for several weeks (when I first started at this company) and it randomly quit working today. In Services.msc, I just clicked the Server service and hit the Restart icon and now everything is fine. Cheers, XD
