Will there be a Skype for Business standalone non click to run installer made available tomorrow?

I would like to know where I will be able to download a non click to run version of Skype for Business when it is released tomorrow. I need the normal installer because I need to turn off the feature, 'Microsoft Sharepoint Foundation Support' as it breaks Outlook in Office 2007.

Thanks!

Hi Buck614,

As Anthony stated, it is a patch to Lync 2013 client.

A few notes and the related KB for your reference. (Both updates are cumulative and contain all previously released fixes for Lync 2013.)

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2889923

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2889853

Notes:

  • You must install both patches on a minimum build of 15.0.4569.1506 (SP1).
  • After you apply this April 14, 2015 update, Lync 2013 will be upgraded to Skype for Business.  Info about the new experience in Skype for Business.
  • For your customers information: You can still use the Lync client user interface after you apply this update for Skype for Business. Here is info on how to switch between the Skype for Business and the Lync client user interfaces for Office 365 users and Lync Server 2013 users.

Best regards,

Eric

So I have a question then. Where can I get Lync 2013 if I am a 365 E1 subscriber? I can't download it from the portal.

It has to be a non click to run version of Lync because I have to be able to deselect the feature, 'Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Support' as it breaks Outlook in Office 2007.

I ask this because there seems to be so many different versions of the program. There are full installers vs click to run. I see that I can get installers for Lync 2013 Basic vs Lync 2013 Standard.

Where do I actually download Lync 2013 client?

Thanks!

You get the Lync 2013 client with Office Pro Plus as well if you have an agreement for that.  Short of that, there's always the Basic version which is free: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35450

The basic version is missing a couple of features, but it's not really that much if you're not an Enterprise Voice user: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg425836.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

Thanks. That is exactly what I needed to know.

Obviously a stand alone installer will have to be released at some point. Hopefully sooner than later.

Office 2016 is coming!  Since this is mostly just a patch, you should see it with the next version of Office.

I have over 200 employees and about 80 still haven't been updated to E3's yet. They probably won't be for a while.

I would hope that Skype For Business is not a tool exclusive to Office 2013-16 users only. Everyone uses it here and we still have some Office 2007 and 2010 users.

As with most organizations, the upgrade path is staggered to offset the cost based on employee needs. We'll see how this pans out I guess.

They might, but it would be a slipstreamed patch in essence until 2016 is available.  We'll have to see what they do about that as the server bits become available.  That's a good question.  I'll see if I can get an answer from the product group.
