Will primary SQL backend server automatically vote in an event when even number of FES are available in a pool in Lync 2013

Hi,

Assuming below setup:

Single Pool Stretched architecture with 5 FES servers

Site A Data Center

Site B Data Center

FES

2

3

SQL

1 Primary

1 Mirror

In a situation when we lose network connectivity in Site A DC, the votes of 3 FES in Site B DC is lost and the quorum is less than 50%, in this situation can the primary SQL server take part in election and become the 3rd voter in favor maintaining quorum to 50% and preventing from Front End Service from stopping and preventing disruption.

Hi Chirag,

Unfortunately no it cannot. The SQL servers are not part of the fabric and do not have a vote, they are completely independent.

It is probably also worth mentioning that stretched pools for Front End servers are not supported. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg425833.aspx

Thanks Georg,

I agree with you that stretched pools are not supported. But I was just startled by the number of servers required to run Lync. We have less than 5K users. Ideally a single FES can manage these many users. But if I setup Lync as per Microsoft recommendation I may end up with 24 total servers (FES, SQL, File Share, Witness server and so on). Thats why I was trying to tweak the design and play around with it.

Thanks once again.
