Will I be able to redownload clean windows XP under my license and get supprot  also do all its programs have stack guard?
Hi, I have a laptop with Windows XP installed updated with Service Pack 3 -- the XP was installed when I bought the computer in 2010 but probably dates to 2008; that is when all the registries date to.Will I be able to, under my 32-bit home edition license clean install it and the Service Pack 3 at this date? without paying more money?I'd upgrade to Windows 7 if one I had more money and if two it would fit on my mini (I bet it won't)Thanks!Best,--C. Is it the same computer as in this thread? => http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/xprepair/thread/a303b084-1791-4248-9453-eddd17fc3d49 ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (IE, Mail, Security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ Disclaimer: MS MVPs neither represent nor work for Microsoft

Thanks for your concern; I understand what you are saying; no way to download a clean copy of Windows (and I doubt Windows 7 will work on my computer and the only backup I have is ancient and needs Service Pack 1 I think first before 3) on a dirty computer. But I guess I've given out enough info about my computer . . .Thanks!!Best,C. I didn't say (or necessarily imply) anything, I simply asked if this thread's about the same computer as in you other thread.Assuming it is, you will use the disks that came with the computer or the hidden Recovery partition (not to be confused with System Restore) to do the clean install of Windows. If the clean install leaves you with WinXP Gold (no Service Packs), you will have to install Service Pack 2 manually before you'll be able to install any updates (including SP3) via Windows Update. Thanks; it's a mini mini so there is no disk drive and no disk but I guess there is a hidden recovery partition. Thanks very much!Sincerely,C. E. Whitehead

I guess there is a hidden recovery partition.MS requires the manufacturer to provide a way to reinstall Windows. Contact the manufacturer or check their support pages (or the documentation that came with the "mini mini" when you bought it, if any).~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (IE, Mail, Security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ Disclaimer: MS MVPs neither represent nor work for Microsoft

Thanks (and hopefully it will not cost me money as I have been living with dental-heart infections for years and still can't get those cleaned up as I have not even the money for one little filling or pulling). But anyway: I went through my registries -- all modifications since I was last sure Norton was running in April -- only a couple appeared to not be connected with my changes to user accounts or installation of Microsoft Updates (that's all I put on my computer besides my .txt files in my documents). These were spyware files that downloaded themselves in spite of my blocking downloads on the 23rd in the evening.I will delete these; I've just spent an hour checking my whole hard drive so really hate to rewrite it and reinstall for just these. I do not know why Norton anti-virus is not running; I updated it in April; it was either as a result of the update or something happened on the 21rst when I was at this forum; that's when I noticed it not running; there is nothing else about its registry files that I can see though I am a dummy.Thanks.Best,C. Lest you be under any other impressions, your computer should NOT be connected to the internet or any local networks (i.e., other computers) in it's current state. All of your data (e.g., online banking & credit-card passwords) should be considered compromised at this point.~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (IE, Mail, Security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ Disclaimer: MS MVPs neither represent nor work for Microsoft

Hi,, my machine seems safe enough as I've found all files I just cannot get Norton to work -- not apparently since visiting here. So to my mind there is someone at this forum who should not be on the net.For me, I was not born yesterday and I do not bank from my computer but from a hardwired hopefully more secure computer and I store few passwords on my computer and none to accounts with more info about me.Thanks for your advice. The issue I have is I do not want to spend more money and do not want to be ripped off. I think Linux Red Hat would be the choice of operating system for me if I had to reformat; I could organize directories the way I wanted and so forth.I do not make any money and really "feel I'm being abused."So CIAO please no need to reply. (If you do I will not as I am leaving this forum; I want a forum where I can get info about spyware I found on my computer; elsewhere on the internet I hear it is spyware; it got written on my computer after my Norton was disabled -- a day or so later when I was surfing; when my Norton was disabled nothing else was written; that seems to have been disabled perhaps when I was here)--C.
