WiFi issues with Windows 7 but not Windows XP
Hi, I have 2 laptops, one has Windows XP installed, and the other I have just recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate on. I connect both to the internet via a Wireless AP. The XP machine has no issues whatsoever connecting to anywhere on the web. The Windows 7 machine does not connect to any websites other than www.google.com/gmail.com bing.com Search results in google are ultra fast, however if I click a link from the search result, the page will time out. I have no idea why the XP machine has no issues, but the Windows 7 machine cannot get on the web. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Craig

Hi,I've read a few threads in various forums regarding this. It seems to be something to do with IPv6....If you right-click the network icon on the notification bar, select 'Network and Sharing center' and click 'Change Adapter settings'. Right-click your wireless adapter and select 'Properties' and de-select IPv6 and see if that helps. Also, in Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Internet Options -> Connections, click 'Lan Settings' and make sure that you...1, Select 'Automatically detect Settings' if it's not already selected or2, De-Select 'Automatically detect Settings' if it's already selected. This sounds a bit backwards but i've read of it working in other similar scenariosHope it help :)Jeff

Hi Jeff, Thanks for your reply, I have tried disabling IPv6 however this hasn't helped. I've also tried both LAN settings. Have disabled the 'Homegroup' thingo. Someone recommended trying DrTCP and setting Path MTU discovery to Enabled and set the MTU size to 1400. This has not worked either. I have looked at all the known settings on the XP machine and tried to match them with the W7 machine but still no change. I am really at a loss at what to try next. Craig

No good unfortunately, have narrowed the issue down a little bit further (hopefully) the issue may not be with the windows 7 machine itself as I can successfully connect it to other wireless networks. Setup is as follows\ Cable modem > NIC on my PC with ICS enabled, Operating system is Windows XP Wireless AP run off 2nd NIC on the PC Could it be something to do with ICS in XP? Craig/

Did you turn off SSID broadcast for your AP? If so, there is a setting in the connection properties called "Connect even when this network is not broadcasting name (SSID)" that needs to be checked in order to connect to the AP in that scenario. See my skydrive (http://cid-7ef032c786c67649.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Misc%20forum%20pics/nossidandw7connection.png ) for screenshot of setting. Hello! Hi Joel, I had set the AP to hide SSID initially. However I changed it to show the SSID after connection issues. I have enabled 'Connect even when this network is not broadcasting name (SSID)' and will test this tonight to see if it makes a difference to the connection. Thanks, Craig

Hi JoelbX, I'm sorry to say, this has not worked either! :( Is there anything else I can try? The strange thing about it is, I can connect to gmail.com & google.com no problem at all, but if I try to connect to say microsoft.com, it times out. I find this extremely strange.. Craig

Did you flush your DNS cache? The pages you can get are probably just stored locally on your comp and you aren't really connected to the net, explaining for when you try to load a new page such as search results it times out. OK, flush that (to do that go to admin command prompt, type without quotes "ipconfig /flushdns" to flush DNS cache, then if you aren't connected to net, you shouldn't access anything at all), then what DNS server settings do you have set (go into the connection properties and check for alternate settings, screenshot of that here )? Had a problem where a company's comps couldnt connect (couldnt find DHCP server) and it was a combo of switching off alternate DNS server settings and a switch not doing DHCP stuff... Have you tried updated drivers for your wireless adapter? Have you tried reinstalling the drivers? How old is it and what is it's model? Can win7 connect fine with another wireless adapter? Oh, what build of win7 are you running? (click start type winver and post what it says) Hello! Ok, I am really annoyed now..... IT'S WORKING. Thing is, I have no idea why all of a sudden it's working. I did not do the last instructions above.. it just all of a sudden is working. If I work out what's changed (which I don't think anything has?) I'll post it... Thanks everyone for helping out.. Craig

criag6,I have found that on a few of these situations entering the router/AP config, disable wireless security, save and exit, the connect usually gets a connection. Then re-enter the router/AP setup, set security for WPA or WPA2, create a key save and exit. Then setup the connection again using that configuration.Win 7 seems to like WPA better than WEP. It is also more secure. It may be wireless nic drivers or somewhat incompatible routers/Ap's. Not sure, but that is what gets connectivity issues working. others have specific notebook/netbook software from the manufacturer that is needed for on/off hot key capabilities and such. This Internet Connectivity tool will identify what features are/are not available with your hardware. It runs and gerenates a report. Features missing only means that you would encounter an issue when attempting to use those networking features. You can check for Win 7 hardware (compatible and Logo'd) here until the actual site is fully live.Anyway, you have it working, so check the router/AP settings and driver versions for future reference.Good Luck with Win 7!
