I have tried to intall some type 1 fonts onto Windows 7. I have both the .PFB and .PFM files. When I drag them into the font folder I get a message saying that ‘this is a ‘PBF’ file for a Type 1 font and cannot be installed directly. Please install the associated ‘PFM’ file. I have installed the ‘PFM’ file but the fonts don’t show up in any of my applications ie: photoshop, indesign, illustrator. Can anyone help me, am I doing something wrong?

I'm not a font guy by any means of the imagination, just don't care that much about fonts. However a little research I did turned up the Adobe forum in which they were having the very same issues in XP and in Vista, so it stands to reasosn, its the same with Winodws 7. However its not a Windows 7 problem but more of a video driver issue. Where do you get the font? It is better to contact the publisher of the font to ask if the font works properly in Windows 7 and how to install it.Arthur Xie - MSFT

I am having this same issue as the OP. Have tried both methods for installing my Type 1 files (e.g. drag and drop and the "install" button in the font viewer) to no avail. When attempting to drag and drop, I receive the same error message as the OP mentioned, and the fonts do not display in my Adobe applications. Does anyone have any additional information they can offer? I have purchased hundreds of fonts in the Type 1 format over the years. For them to not work in Windows 7 is completely unacceptable.

I've tried this with the Type-1-font "Hypnerotomachia". If you right-click on the *.pfm file, select "open" and choose "install" from the preview window, it gets installed without problems. I did the same with the *.ttf version of this font, now having "Hypnerotomachia (Type 1)" and "Hypnerotomachia (TTF)" in my windows\fonts directory. (For the Type-1 font, you should have the corresponding *.afm, *.inf, *.pfb and *.pfm files in one folder.)Edit: The problem seems to be that even with an installed *.pfm font, all Windows applications (Word, Publisher..) don't show it, recognizing only the *.ttf variant. Maybe this is by design, given that Adobe abandoned the Type-1 format years ago.
