Why isn't MSE recognized by Security Center?
In Performance Information and Tools/Advanced Tools/Generate a system health report, Security Center has not recorded an anti virus product. The Security Center is unable to identify an active anti virus. Now what is more ironic than Microsoft's own anti virus program not being recognized by Windows 7's Security Center? I had to disable alert notification for anti virus. What is going on here?

I can't say what is going on with your system but I have 5 systems running various versions of Windows 7 with MSE and all report properly in the security center.I would look at what third party software you have added as the possible source of this issue.

Yes, it reports it properly in Action Center under Security, but not where I posted above--In Performance Information and Tools/Advanced Tools/Generate a system health report, Security Center has not recorded an anti virus product. The Security Center is unable to identify an active anti virus. Do that, generate a health report. I hope the moderator hasn't been misled by your post.

Hello, I just checked this as well , and can confirm that Windows 7 does not seem to recognize MSE. The system diagnostics report output is as following: Symptom: The Security Center has not recorded an anti-virus product. Cause: The Security Center is unable to identify an active anti-virus application. Either there is no anti-virus product installed or it is not recognized. Resolution: 1. Verify that an anti-virus product is installed. 2. If an anti-virus product is installed and functioning configure Security Center to stop monitoring anti-virus status. I get that same exact error except with Norton Antivirus 2010. Action Center reports everything right. Typing in that "perfmon /report" generates the error that contradicts what the Action Center states. It's not very comforting and doesn't lend much confidence to methat Microsoft's own reporting tools for their own OSare not accurate. This really needs to be fixed.

I just put this post in the Security Centre postings relevant to this item but it's clearly more relevant here: I've found the same thing with MSE not recognised. Is it relevant that my previous anti-virus was also Avira? Another thing...I've just run Belarc Advisor and it, too, reports, in System Security Status, under Virus Protection, "Unknown" and, further down in Details: Virus Protection, "No details available".

I have NAV 2010 installed on Windows 7 Professional and as of today when I Created a System Health Report I found the same issue, Security Center is not seeing an installed Anti-Virus program.

I have exactly the same issue with MSE as outlined by Alex Verboon__ above. The Action Center shows that I have an antivirus program but the perfomance report says I don't. I have an HP Pavilion dv7t-3000 Notebook running Windows 7 64-bit. HP also has a performance report that shows the same as the Windows performance report. It appears that we have a lot of posters with the problem, but no one has yet got any answers. I will be monitoring this thread anxiously awaiting a solution. Thanks, Richard

I have a lot of machines with MSE on them, and they all are working fiine. XP, Vista, Windows 7, no problems. I suggest cleaning your registry for any residue of other antimalware programs and use MSE as a stand alone. I tested AVG removal and also with them both installed. No problems, however Symantec's consumer software is not a product I prefer. I have a lot of virtual machines with various test platforms for beta software etc so I am sure that its a problem elsewhere as MSE is fine on a clean install.Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! @Is01c I have MSE and the same issue you show above. This seems to me a bug in Windows 7--and it appears with up-to-date Microsoft Security Essentials, and also other anti-virus programs. Now, Security Center shows the anti-virus is installed, but when generating a health report, as you did, the message is what you show above.

Received an update message on my computer for MSE so I installed this new version: 1.0.1961.0 The issue of generating a health report and getting that message of no anti-virus program being recognized still exists--updating to new MSE version does not solve the problem. The problem is, I believe, inherent in Windows 7.

Curious as I have rolled out MSE to a lot of clients with no issues. So I am a bit perplexed with your setup. When I installed Windows 7 back last year I was still using AVG which works fine, and I switched to MSE after removing AVG and I had no problems with the switch. If you cannot get MSE to work, the free version of AVG is a good alternative. http://free.avg.com but watch for the ads etc.Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! You apparently still do not understand the issue. The problem is not getting MSE to work--the problem occurs when generating a health report! Now how many times have I said that? Do you read what I and others write? Why don't you follow the instructions to generate a health report and post back here what it says as others including myself have done? I also confirm Resource and Performance Monitor cannot find MSE on 3 computers with Windows 7 Home Premium x64 and one with x86. Hopefully Windows 7 Service Pack 1 will correct. I have a new computer with Windows 7. I just installed MSE yesterday. I have the same issue. I am in total agreement with ambizytl. You are completely disregarding what the actual problem is. This has nothing to do with a registry issue or MSE not working. MSE IS recognized as Anti Virus software in the Action Center. MSE DOES work and run scans fine. The ONLY place is does NOT appear to be okay, is when you generate a health report of your system.

1. Please ignore Vegan Fanatic, he is only posting to promote his own websites. 2. Since a customer alerted me to this issue I have been able to verify on numerous computers using a variety of antivirus software (MSE, Avast, NIS, AviraAntivir) that the products install correctly and work correctly, they are also reported correctly in the Action center (antivirus installed, updating correctly, virus scanning on). However generating a health reportresults in the following: Symptom: The Security Center has not recorded an anti-virus product. Cause: The Security Center is unable to identify an active anti-virus application. Either there is no anti-virus product installed or it is not recognized. Resolution: 1. I agree with Cyanna. I have two Gigabyte GA-MA785GT-UD3H machines with fresh install of Vista now at SP2, both with MSE as original and only anti-virus program. One has Windows Defender enabled in MSCONFIG and the other has Defender disabled. However both report "The security center has not recorded an anti-virus product" and same for anti-malware. No other fault with either rig. Must be a bug in Vista (and in 7 it seems). Microsoft have been very remiss on this. atlantean5 MCP MCDST

Ok This does exsist and it is a problem with the windows vista (all) and Windows 7 (all). Where is Microsoft with the resultion. This is a requirement for security reports to management and as such needs to be corrected ASAP or a document (by Microsoft) as to it's status.

Last week I had a computer come with with serious problems. Network did not work, system tools blocked. Scanning the disk found serveral malware programs. Cleaned them up, but when I put the disk back the problems remained. So I booted a VM with other tools, nothing recognized anything yet clearly malware was present. I used AVG and a few others, nothing. So given this crap in the wild, and so far no cleaner can fix it. I suspect others may be affected. Given this, I was able to finally clean the client data files off the machine and I ran the recovery. This wiped everything but I had a DVD with the user files. The DVD may be contaminated so I told the client not to use it until one tool or another can finally recognize this new crop of crap. Vegan fanatic kind of reminds me of our current President,.................If you are ignorant, keep spinning. I can verify the same problem with a health report, it says It can find no anti-virus installed, but I have MSE is running fine on Vista SP2. Just another bug MS does not have the time to fix as they are more interested in developing new OS with more bugs...... I'm sure it has something to do with MSE install deactivating Windows Defender, which cannot be un-installed because it is part of Vista OS. I don't have any PC running Windows 7 yet, but can anyone tell me if Windows Defender is still an un-removable part of that OS? The instructions on the health report telling me to just de-activiate the anti-virus monitor, is useless also, I can't find any just disable menu in the Security Center anymore since installing MSE? What Security Center "Help" tells me: "Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. Windows regularly checks to see if an antivirus program is installed on your computer, that it's running, and that it's up to date. The status of your antivirus program is displayed in Windows Security Center. However, Windows does not detect all antivirus programs, and some antivirus programs don't report their status to Windows." But why does MS's own MSE not report to the OS???????

Let it be known that by my own research (it being lead to this forum); as of this posting, this still continues to be an issue. “When generating a ‘System Health Report’ the resulting report is unable to verify that the ‘Windows Security Center’ / ‘Windows Action Center’ has a valid AntiVirus program installed and working and the following ‘Warning’ is reported: “The Security Center is unable to identify an active anti-virus application. Either there is no anti-virus product installed or it is not recognized.” Again: this warning is reported by the ‘System Health Report’ and not within ‘Windows Security Center’. I have verified this in two different boxes, of newly installed OS (one, Win-7 Pro; the other, Win-7 HP-UG, 3-Pack Edition in a clean install) having NAV-2011 installed (twice). I imagine this issues is of a low priority nature and a “Known Issue” was reported in the ‘MS Security Essentials’ forum but this is an issues with other AV programs as well, as others (and myself) have noted. I’m hoping to see a fix for this in the near future… Late Note To All in search of a FIX: See the HotFix Article ID: 2482947 - Last Review: February 10, 2011 @Vegan Fanatic: my post wasn't a direct reply, just a general one and used the 'Reply' link because I'm lazy :)
