Why is it so difficult to keep Win 7 router connection as a private network?
I keep getting "Unidentified Network" Public, that prevents Internet access (as it probably should initially), but DARN, this is a computer and it should remember the initial private connection. Instead of "merge or delete" network link how about a "pick from prior network connections" link. Each reconnection is a fools dance changing the "Unidentified Network" Public to a private network because it doesn't seem to save the prior successful settings. This is computing at its WORSE, and will finally (after tolerating Win 95,98,me,XP,Vista) be the last straw pushing me to a MacBook. Why not keep WinXP for those of us who actually liked it? At least it didn't take 15 minutes to set up an internet connection EVERY Friggin' TIME! Is there a patch or good workaround for this ? Are the Microsoft Programmers Impaired? Why the Silence from Micro$oft? This happens on most of the Win 7 computers I have used. HELP ME GATES! what router are you connecting to and what firmware? wired? wireless? what network card(s) and what drivers? did you change the default name of the wireless from Linksys, Default, to something else? Hi, you can first try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue: 1. Bypass the router and connect to cable modem directly for a test. Do you need disable Local Area Connection now? If so, please let me know. Otherwise, please upgrade the router firmware and then connect to router again. 2. Temporarily turn off firewall on the machine and router (If it has). 3. Upgrade the NIC driver. 4. Restart the computer to Safe Mode with Networking to check the result. 5. Configure the connection to obtain an IP address automatically ======================================= a. Click "Start", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotation marks) to Start Search bar and press "Enter". b. Right-click the network connection and click "Properties". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. c. Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" and click "Properties". d. Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". e. Click "OK". f. Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and click "Properties". g. Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically". h. Click "OK". i. Reboot the computer.
