Why is Samba performance slow with Windows 7?
It appears that Windows7 suffers from the embedded protocol (asWindows Vista does), and this results in slower network performance when communicating with Samba-based products. What are your experiences? Any hints or ideas?

OMG yes! samba is so freaking slow when i try to connect through windows 7. What is this embedded protocol and how can I fix it?? Samba and windows 7 are not compatible! I have 6 XP machines and 2 macs which can access the SAMBA on Ubuntu blindingly fast. My internet is quite fast too. Only my network file sharing to samba on the 2x windows 7 pcs on this network run slow as ____. help me!

I am finding the same thing. 2 Vista machines connect and perform well with my linux samba shares, but windows 7 is all but unusable. I have my mail profile for thunderbird on the samba share and it takes nearly 5 minutes to open (vs. a few seconds on the Vista system)Three weeks left. If Microsoft does not provide a solution (or samba) I am going back to Vista.

I have this issue too, and it's even worse over wireless. One MAJOR suggestion, especially if you have mapped drives, is to add your network shares to your antivirus exclusion list. I hate doing this, but there is no doubt about it--Windows 7 treats network shares like local drives. When you browse a folder and it decides to, e.g. display the program icons of files on your shares, it requests that antivirus scan the file for viruses. So the big slowdown is especially a result of antivirus scanning every file in your network share. Excluding the shares makes the whole thing tolerable. I still get random hangups when browsing a shared drive, and I have had the explorer crash on me some, but with antivirus at bay I'm a much happier person.

The person that asked the question did not mention anything about a drive mapping. Why would you actually want to use a drive mapping if you can use the URL directly like Interesting observation though, that W& treats shares like local drives. But then how comes you cannot add files on shares in libraries so they get indexed? \\remotecomputer\share\map Anyhow, it seems nobody at Microsoft that are moderating the forums actually know much about this - sigh

Windows 7 performance with Samba is truely atrocious. Does anyone in MS monitor this list? I would like to see them get off their but and try to resolve this - but then it is a competitive system. It would also be nice if the Samba guys could show some effective interest.

Resolved my issue by doing the following from a command prompt c:\windows\system32\netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled and removing "remote differential compression. See article here: http://www.sysprobs.com/windows-7-network-slow
