Why is RDP from Windows 7 Ultimate x64 to same so very slow?
I work part time at the console of my work Windows 7 machine at work and part time from home, also a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 machine. When home, I RDP into the work machine. Let's call the home one C (for RDP client) and the work one S (for RDP server). When I RDP from C to S, it used to be that sometimes it was very very slow. Recently, it has been happening every single time I go home and RDP into work. By "slow" I mean keyboard input, mouse movements are very slowly acted upon. It could take a minute to see the Start menu after clicking on it. I accidentally discovered that wildly moving the mouse makes things more responsive, but that has a bad effect on menus (sometimes making them go away!). What I know: The load on both machines was nil. The ping times from home to work very fast (< 20ms). If I reboot the work computer or logout, the problem is corrected. I found this via searching: http://blog.tmcnet.com/blog/tom-keating/microsoft/remote-desktop-slow-problem-solved.asp I've set the autotuninglevel to highlyrestricted on both machines. I've set rss to disabled. I tried setting all the TCP offload items to disabled in the Advanced networking. I've tried every suggestion that I've seen and NOTHING fixes this except a reboot or logout of the work computer. The RDP settings for the connection, Experience: everything unchecked except "Persistent bitmap caching"; Display 16-bit color (15-bit color didn't make any difference); displaying in full screen. Logging out of my work computer is really inconvenient, since I lose the state of all my applications. I am totally frustrated by this and it is KILLING my productivity. Please help!

Hi, · Please click “Options” in RDP client and switch to the “Experience” tab and adjust the Performances settings to see how it works. If the issue persists, please set Registry as following to disable SNP(Scalable Networking Pack): Note: Please backup your Registry before you take this action. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters] EnableTCPChimney=dword:00000000 EnableTCPA=dword:00000000 EnableRSS=dword:00000000 If the keys are not there, please create them first. Hope it helps. Regards, Alex ZhaoPlease remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I experience this same issue, however mine is still intermittent. As the OP stated, a reboot fixes it every time. We utilize a Juniper/Terminal server solution for remote access: External PC -> Juniper VPN -> RDP Terminal server ->Win 7 RDP Remote PC I've experienced the problem when connecting to both Windows Server 2003 and 2008 R2 Terminal Servers, RDP6 and RDP7 clients. The 2008 R2 server was brand new and I was 1 of 2 people testing it, ruling out a performance issue there. Plus, at the initial RDP client prompt via the TSE, there is no slowness at all. It isn't until I've logged into my remote machine that the screen refreshes become a problem. I only have the slowness issue described by the OP when RDPing from external. I RDP from our internal network almost daily as well without issue. One thing I would add to the OPs description about the slow updates; I can get the screen to update a bit faster if I move the mouse over an item that shows some sort of feedback. ie. A link, a mouseover button(such as in a browser), or even over a bit of text that changes the cursor. Clicks seem to register immediately based on the split second feedback I see before the screen freezes. Otherwise, it is exactly how it's described above. I'm confident it is not a bandwidth issue as I've had the same problem when connecting to the VPN from our internal network, where I can easily download at 5MB/s, just to test. I've implemented the changes recommended above and rebooted. I will report the result after I have a while to test. Joe
