Why does modem cause desktop icons to load slowly?
For quite some time, my desktop icons have loaded slowly. I finally decided to do something about it. I began by initiating diagnostic procedures using MSConfig. When the Load System Services was unchecked, I was able to reproduce the icon slow loading problem. By accident, I decided to turn off my DSL modem for a while. I turned the computer off for a while too. When I turned the computer back on with the modem turned off, voila!, the desktop icons loaded almost immediately. I can now make the icons load slowly or almost immediately by turning the modem on or off.Can anyone suggest what I should do further at this point? Can anyone explain in relatively simple terms why the modem would affect the loading of desktop icons? I would appreciate any assistance.1 person needs an answerI do too

My desktop icons have been loading slowly for some time. I finally decided to perform diagnostic procedures. Using MSConfig, I narrowed it down to Load System Services. Then, I accidentally closed in on the real reason. Whenever the modem (for DSL) is turned off, the desktop icons load almost immediately. Can anyone tell me in simple language why that should be? What would you suggest I do to completely solve the problem?

Hi,· What is the make & model of the modem?Let’s follow these methods & check if it helps.Method 1If you have any unused network drives, you may disconnect them & check if the issue persists.a. Open My Computer > On the Tools menu, click Disconnect Network Drive.b. Select the network drives that you no longer need, and then click OK.Method 2a) You may download and install the network adapter drivers from the manufacturer’s website and check if the issue persists. For more information, refer: How to manage devices in Windows XPb) Additionally, you may also do a firmware update for the modemfrom the manufacturer’s website & check if the issue reappears.Refer:Restore Your Computer's Performance with Windows XP Hope the information helps. The make and model of the modem is Westell, Model A90-220015-04, Rev: M.One other thing that I should mention (although I don't know whether this has anything to do with it) is that for a couple of months now, I haven't been able to use DSL the way I use to. I can only connect to the Internet while using WAN Miniport (PPPOE).
