Why does credential manager not retain information?
Windows Credentials/Windows Vault forgets all windows credentials when the PC is rebooted. Details on this PC: 1. domain joined 2. Corporate image, second PC out of about 100 to do this 3. All profiles have this issue 4. Generic credentials stay, Windows credentials disappear 5. If I go to the directory where the credentials are stored (C:\Users\*user*\app data\local\microsoft\credentials) I can see that the folder has been edited (due to time) and the folder contains info (if I unhide the OS files). When i restart, info is gone... One fix I had was copy the folder and pasted it in the same directory (named "Credentials - Copy") and upon reboot the credentials stored are saved. 6. This started as only a few PC's now all of sudden its nearly every PC we get (same image as previous PC's) Anyone have any suggestions on the issue?

Well, I am no genius and I dont work for M$, but I do have a problem similar to yours that I am hoping to find and answer for. In my situation, there are 2 domains, let's say A and B. My computer is in Domain B. I have an account in Domain A and want to access resources in Domain A, so I add a stored credential via "control keymgr.dll" and add a windows credential for *.domain.com domaina\username for the user/pw info, works great. I can access any resource in Domain A without being prompted for a username/password. However, "domain.com" is the same in both domains, and I also need access to resources in Domain B, so I have to fully qualify those entries. I add hosetname.domain.com using domainb\username for login credentials and all is well. If I dont add this entry, when I try to access the resource in domain b, it will try to authenticate with my *.domain.com stored credential which uses domaina\username to authenticate and fails since the domain\username is incorrect. I then get prompted for username/pw. However, if I add the fully qaulified domain B entry all is well and things are just peachy - until I reboot. When I reboot, the FQDN credential disappears, but the *.domain.com credential remains. Both are(or should I say were) under Windows Credentials. If I add the FQDN entry under generic credentials, it remains but does not authenticate me. It appears as though Windows 7 looks at the entry, does a bit of thinking and says to itself, "Hey, this dude is already in domain b, why do I need this entry?" and deletes it. I have somewhat validated this by reversing the scenario put the computer into domain A, added the same windows credentials via "control keymgr.dll" and a reboot causes the domain A entries to be deleted and the domain B entries remain. For all entries, the persistence is set to Enterprise. If the generic credentials would actually work, that would solve my problem as they dont seem to disappear. Is there any way to keep windows credential entries from being deleted? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

I have a similar problem. I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 non domain joined computer and every time I restart every Windows and Generic credential in the Credential Manager Windows Vault is lost. If I backup the vault I am able to restore the vault after the restart.

I also have this problem in windows 7 home premium SP1 as soon as I reboot I loose any credentials I have setup with in my home network. I seem to however have a persistent Generic Credential Virualapp/didlogical that when I delete it it returns. I did not make it and am not sure what it belongs to?

We are seeing the exact same issue. It seems this has been around for a while, but I'm not finding a solution online anywhere. If you have faced this problem and solved it, please let us know the trick!
