Why does MS bundle software as iso?
MS doesn't even have a method to access the iso. You need to get third party tools. Why don't they just give explorer some functionality like daemontools?

Actually the .ISO is not a "bundle" so much as it is an image of the CD or DVD that may be burned to a disc. Perhaps someday the capability to "see" inside the .ISO will be added to Windows Explorer, but there are many free utilities available to use on your computer.

There are two categories of men (following "The good, the bad and the ugly"): One complains that Windows integrates too much tools and damages 3d party competition (see the European IE case), the other half complains that Windows contains less tools than desirable. Both aren't completely wrong, in a certain way."I think there is a world market for maybe five computers. (Thomas J. Watson, Sr.)

Both aren't completely wrong, in a certain way. "I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.” (Thomas J. Watson, Sr.) That is so true! However in this case, Windows 7 does natively have the ability to burn an ISO to disc (which in all honesty is the first thing I would want to do with any downloaded software.)

This feature was requested during Beta very often (the connect entries had a lot of votes, but MS didn't implement it). Why don't you use freeware tools like MagicDisc or Virtual CloneDrive?"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

I do use free tools. The point is that there is no consistency with MS. They should create their own format and provide a native tool for accessing it. That would be consistent. If something is inconsistent, then it is hard to use. This is one of MS's biggest problems. Instead, they bundle things into a format that they can't access. They natively support zip files now. Explorer is actually annoying about that. I personally unreg zipfldr. If they are going to natively support zips, then the iso's should instead be zips, unless of course iso is needed for some reason such as bootable image. Natively burn an iso?? Are you kidding me? Why should I have to waste money on disc media? You burn to discs? You must not have been at this very long. Hard drives are cheaper and have more longevity than optical media. The only place I want the data in the iso is on my Hard Drive. And I should have the option to easily get it there.

Give it a rest already!

Thanks for giving me one of the biggest laughs of today! I have optical media over 10 years old still perfectly accessible, I don't have hard drives that age. In fact I've got one hard drive just over a year old due to be RMA'd as it cannot reliably store data!

Give it a rest? The problem is that I need to find a solution. If your're an average user, this is way to hard to accomplish, and it should not be. It should be easy. Of course, if you're an MS lacky, you don't care much about reason. I'm complaining in the hopes that someone at MS will realize this stuff should be fixed / features should be added.

Your problem is that you are complaining in a peer-to-peer forum for people looking for assistance with Windows 7. If you want to compalin to Microsoft then contact Microsoft and file your complaint. You're just spinning your wheels and wasting time posting your compalint here. This is not the compalint department! So you're totally lost! If you don't like Microsoft products, the switch to Apple or Linux!

Mr. ms is a pain, please decide if you are only claiming missing features in Windows (you won't get an easy response to that) or trying "to find a solution" for extracting the *.ISO contents to your harddisk. The latter is easy, just use 7-zip (whow, no MS tool) that can handle *.ISOs and extract it to a folder/drive of your choice. Unfortunately, the built-in Zip utility can't do that."I think there is a world market for maybe five computers. (Thomas J. Watson, Sr.)
