generally, after windows updates are installed, the system needs to be shut down in order to write the new information into the registry. If the system is not gracefully powered down (say, it freezes or otherwise locks up) and the power has to be removed abruptly, then the updates will not be applied. Now, you can go to the add/remove programs in the control panel, and mark the show all updates tab to see which of them did/didn't install...then use the windows update feature of the start menu to see what your settings are for downloading and installing them, and what time of day they are set to be installed. If the computer isn't actually on at htat time of day/night, then they won't be downloaded, or installed, either..."THE EASIEST THING TO GET IN THIS WORLD IS A WRONG ANSWER!" "I "DO" WINDOWS...."

I have the same problem and, although I'm using Vista now I also had the problem when using XP. I reckon the problem is related to the fact that the Office software I'm using is a bit ancient and no longer supported. The solution I have found is to download the update manually and apply it manually. Hope this helps.
