Why do I have to enter WEP key every time I access wireless internet?
I'm running Win 7 Home Premium on a desktop computer. There is only ONE user, me. I installed a wireless card. When I click on the icon to connect, I click the "connect" button, and every time I have to enter the WEP key. I've tried leaving the check box checked and unchecked where it says "connect automatically", but I still have to enter the key no matter which one is selected. I've searched all possible files and help sections and I can't find a way to keep it permanently entered. (I installed Win 7 on my laptop and it NEVER asks for the WEP key.) How do I get this to stop happening?

Well, since no one else has this problem, the only solution to this and a dozen other Windows 7 problems is to reload XP, literally throw Win 7 in the trash, and continue to enjoy XP until 2014 when Microsoft will no longer support XP. At that time, I will buy an Apple.

When you installed the wireless card, you may have installed a connection manager provided by the card's manufacturer. Make sure that you don't have both Windows and something else both trying to manage the connection simultaneously. I suggest turning off or uninstalling any manufacturer's utility.

Hi, In addition, please also check the Wireless Network Profiles: 1. Go to "Network and Sharing Center and click the link Manage wireless networks on the left pane of the window. 2. In Manage wireless networks window", locate the profile for the network, double-click on it. 3. In this connections properties, ensure the item Connect automatically when this network is in range is selected. 4. Then, please switch to Security tab and ensure that the Security type, your password and other settings are proper. Hope this helps. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT

I have exactly this same problem. And now it's 2011. No matter how many times I go to "Manage wireless networks window" it always reverts to asking me the WEP key again each time the computer is booted. I did not install any driver for the wireless network adapter. Windows is managing the network. Although this one is via a micro-miniature USB key so maybe it's driver somehow conflicts with Windows 7. @Mickey Way: I'm on your wavelength. Already have converted two of my computers to iMacs. Haven't done this one or one other one yet, but they are on my list. Out of the four computers my family has, guess which ones I have to spend all my time on fixing problems...
