Why can't Lync Server 2010 be installed on a DC?

Hi,

I'm trying to install Lync Server 2010 on an Hpc Server 2008 R2 system. I got everything working, topology builder, sql server, etc. and after all that, when I run the Install Local Configuration Store app, I get this error           Prerequisite not satisfied: This product cannot be installed on a DC

Anybody have any ideas?

I had the same problem. with a Lync 2010 Standard Edition. If i remember correctly, the SQL Server Express instance was causing the installation to fail. An option for the SQL Server Express installation did not work on a domain controller...maybe you can try to use an existing SQL Server...i gave up and used another windows server....

Hi,

AFAIK Lync Server should not be installed on DC so try to install it on some other machine as I mentioned in this blog post kindly check it out.

This is by-design as Lync Server is not supported and should not be installed on a domain controller.  If in the installation blocker is in fact the SQL Express (although I'm not sure about this as I've installed SQL Express and SQL Server on DCs before in test labs) you could install SQL Server on the DC and then deploy a single Enterprise Edition Lync Server (Standard Edition only works with SQL Express).

This will be totally unsupported but if you are just setting up a test deployment then it should work for you. (But in that case just use Hyper-V and deploy multiple guests.)

This issue is not because SQL Server installation, simply Lync Server cannot be installed in a DC ... this is by design.

Yes, I'm still not fully aware yet as to why, but Lync Server cannot be installed on a Domain Controller. However, thanks to Hyper-V I was able to run it on the same box, which was my main concern. I was mainly trying to avoid dedicating more than one machine to a 64 bit O.S.

Thank you everyone for your help, I appreciate your time.

FYI that approach above is entirely unsupported, so use at your own risk (and unless there was a Koala bear in the room I don't find that photoshopped screenshot as ample proof that a video call actually worked in that environment :) )

As a refered on the blog, is just for Lab/POC environment, and is MS unsupported and I don't recommend this deployment in any production model... It doesn't even make any sense.

As for the Koala,
Since the workstations are all VMs, I used ManyCam to emulated a video stream (the koala picture can be found on the Windows 7 default sample pictures).
I can connect my USB camera to that, but you can always question if the picture is from that Lync configuration...
