Why can't I share a folder with network media players?
Hi, I have a couple of networked media players (Freecom 350 & 450) that, since migrating from XP to Win 7 no longer see shared foders on the Win 7 machine. They used to work fine with XP. I presume these boxes are running a SAMBA client in a Linux environment.Obviously I have enabled file sharing etc and set read write permissions for Everyone on the Win machine. Looking online clearly there's a bunch of people with the same issue.I have tried all the proposed soutions I can find online, mainly these involve changing various settings in the Local Security Policy on the Win 7 machine. None of them seem to work for me. Also I have changed 'Network Access: Sharing and security model for local accounts' to 'Guest Ony' which removes the User Name & Password Prompt everytime I try and access shared folders from other XP machines and I have the guest account enabled on Win 7 machine. So, in sumary, XP can see shared foders fine without prompt for user name & password. Media Players can't see shared folders. So, my question is... What has chaged so radically from XP & Vista to Win 7 to break shared folders making them inaccessible to some SAMBA clents? And, how do I get Win 7 files sharing to behave like XP & Vista?Any ideas?Ian

Please make the following changes for NTLM authentication level. 1. Launch regedit from Start Search box.2. Find the following branch. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa 3. Create a DWORD key under Lsa and set: Name: LmCompatibilityLevel Value: 1 4. Restart.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hi ArthurThanks for your response, alas it doesn't work. As before, media players can see the Win7 PC on the network, but can't see the shared folders. Other XP PCs can see the Win7 shares fine.I think I now have to install Network Monitor to try and figure what's going on. It's clearly down to changes in Win7 network security and access policies. A Google search indicates a huge number of people with the exact same problem, so I guess it wont be long before someone stumbles upon a solution?!Ian

Note the date of the last posting! A year on AND this issue still has NOT been fixed ... in fact all threads dealing with this share problem go round in circles and finally run out of steam and then descend into silence. MS just won't address this problem.
