Why Windows 7 can't start applications (incl. Notepad, Calc, etc.)
Any ideas why Windows 7 (32 bit, Pro) can't start even simple applications - including Calculator, Notepad, Paint, Task Manager, etc., provided that there is lots of memory available, handles are in the proximity of 20k and definitelly no viruses
present? This happens after couple of days, running our application, which contunues to work without any issues. What we've noticed is that applications that have been left open/running CAN be opened again - e.g. if Paint was opened beforehand, it could be
started again and again, but nothing else.
After machine restart, everything starts like breeze. There are no remarkable resource leaks in our application - it usually can run for weeks/months without any problem otherwise.
p.s. When the above happens, and we try to start an application, which can't start, Windows says nothing, remains silent like a fish. Nothing present in the Event Logs or anywhere else.

Hi,
First, I suggest perform a
System Restore to check the result.
If the issue persists, please perform a
Clean Boot and open Task Manager, open Notepad to monitor if the process is running in the list.
Meanwhile, please also refer to the following post to scan the malware.

Hi Niki Han,
Thanks for your answer - however we've struggled quite much with this issue, and tried all of these - it is nothing of this kind. Windows 7 is exhausting some resource, and so far we can't find which one. We have the suspicion it might be somehow connected
with DCOM invocations - any idea?

Rover

Hi Rover,
Please refer to the following steps to disable DCOM in Windows 7.
1.
Type Component Services in the search box to open it.
2.
In the console tree, click the
Computers folder, right-click the computer for which you want to enable or disable DCOM, and then click
Properties.
3.
Click the
Default Properties tab.
4.
To disable DCOM, clear this check box.
5.
Click
OK.
After that, please check if the issue occurs again. If so, please perform a System File Checker. Open a CMD window with Administrator privileges and
run the following command.
SFC /SCANNOW
Please let me know if any error is checked.
