Why Doesn't Windows 7 Allow me to create a DOS bootable 3.5 floppy?
Sir: I use the format option to "Create a DOS bootable" floppy. The floppy will not boot to DOS. I encounter the error message that the disk is improper or something to this effect. I delete the Autoexec.bat and replace with my own Autoexec.bat - not effective. I want to create the 3.5 floppy turnkey disk that boots into DOS. I sell DOS compatible programs on the turnkey disk. Please reply at your convenience. CreateBackUp

Windows 7 does not have the ability to create a simple, basic, DOS- based boot floppy since it is not based on the old DOS-based operating system. If you have an older computer running Windows XP, please see: How do I create a bootable floppy from XP? Carey Frisch

Oh? That's interesting too. I don't have any floppies to try it. I wonder if it really generates the 640K Real-Mode DOS of the past. When you type VER at the prompt, does it say something like MS-DOS Version 6.22 ?

ver returns Windows Millennium [Version 4.90.3000]. The exact same information I get from a floppy formatted in XP w/SP3. The floppies have worked for anything I have needed a DOS disk for like doing a BIOS update. I have a couple USB sticks I have made bootable using these disks also. I have used them for BIOS updates on a laptop and a netbook.

Jeez, that's slick. Can you explain how to, or post a link? Thanks!

Are you using a 1.4MB disk or a 720KB disk? I know Windows 7 has a problem formatting 720KB disks and you must format them from the command line as you did back when everyone had MS-DOS. The only other thing I can think of is if your floppies are old and have bad spots. Or, that your floppy drive might be bad. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Sir: I use the format option to "Create a DOS bootable" floppy. The floppy will not boot to DOS. Are you referring to these Windows 7 Help & Support instructions? Format a floppy disk "To create a disk that can be used to start your computer, select the Create an MSDOS startup disk check box." It doesn't work? Maybe this thread will give you some leads: How do I boot a Windows 7 machine to DOS? I've also been following the progress of Vegan's thread: Make USB Stick Bootable He's trying to make a bootable floppy image file on flash media. @bobkn: That's an interesting site. I wonder if that retro stuff is authentic. Hmmm. Interesting. Thanks.

How do you do it? Currently I use a program called FlashBoot although I have done it other ways, also. I use FlashBoot since it allows me to make bootable flash drives from floppies, CDs, and DVDs. I especially like installing Windows 7 from a USB flash drive because ti is a bit quicker than from the DVD and I don't have to be concerned about portable systems having a DVD drive. I was asking CreateBackUp about his situation. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Based on other replies here, I'm just wonderring why you need a bootable 3.5 floppy disk? If you really want a small bootable device, a USB key could be much more better. Refer here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/jeffa36/archive/2009/04/22/windows-7-setting-up-a-usb-bootable-device-for-installs.aspx Regards, MiyaThis posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. | Please remember to click "Mark as Answer" on the post that helps you, and to click "Unmark as Answer" if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I don't really keep track of which version I use. I have used the disks created in XP and Win 7 as well as some old DOS 6.2 and others. I am curious as to why Miya Yao thinks Carey Frisch's post stating there is no capability in Windows 7 as the answer to the original post when it is obviously incorrect? Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This make absolutely no sense to me!Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
