Why Can't Compressed Folders Include Files Whose Names Include Certain Characters?
I have a folder with a few hundred workbooks that I want to put into a zip file (compressed folder). When I tried to do that I got an error message that said: [Window Title] Compressed (zipped) Folders Error [Content] '<Path><File Name>' cannot be compressed because it includes characters that cannot be used in a compressed folder, such as -. You should rename this file or directory. [OK] I don't every having a problem with WinZip because of a file name. If the file name is valid for the file sysem why is it not valid for a compressed folder? http://www.saberman.com

would you be willing to try a 3rd party solution? try 7zip or a file rename tool. The windows explorer GUI zip tool doesn't offer many options.

Perhaps you missed this part of the original post: "I don't every having a problem with WinZip because of a file name. If the file name is valid for the file sysem why is it not valid for a compressed folder?" The question is why does the Windows 7 OS which is supposed to produce a standard zip archive have a problem with compressing a file with any file name that is supported by the OS? This appears to be a bug and it would be nice if someone from Microsoft would jump in. http://www.saberman.com
