Wheres the desktop?
Hi Everyone, I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem with WIN7RC, after My compter starts and I login I get an error saying the C:/ system32/windows/desktop.int cannot be located. and that it may be somewhere else on the drive... ETC..so I go and log off and log back in again and poof everything is fine my desktop is there my Icons and everything. I don't understand it. I love the the OS but this is like the only quirk that bugs, it's like I have to log in and log out then log in again to get to my desk top. any Ideas? why this may be?

Hi Ronnie, Thanks for the reply, I did do that but it's still does the same thing when I start up. It's just strange, to be honest I can live with it really until the RTM is available then I'll have to wipe the drive clean and start from scratch. I originally updated from Vista which was good to me, but this is way much better! I'll post the exact error words next time I log on to laptop Best Regards Walter

So I logged off and logged back in again and it was all fine.... so we'll see what happens when I get home and start it up again... Keep you posted

Okay so this is the error I get since I restarted C:/windows/system32/config/systemprofile/desktop/ refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or a network drive. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted or that your connected to the Internet or your network and try again if it still cannot be located the information might have been moved to a different location And the Funny thing is that I'll logg off and relog back in and poof all fixed... any Ideas?

HiIt sounds like the Desktop Folder inyour useraccount may be corrupted? If you have another user account set up, try logging on with that account and if the problem also affects that user.If not, try opening Windows Explorer and move all of the Icons, except the system icons, such as Recyle Bin, Computer, etc out of that folder to another folder for safe keeping.Next try going toyour account folders atC:\Users\your name. (Where 'your name' is the name of the account you are logged on with). In the right side pane, right click the Desktop Folder and select Delete. make sure the folder goes to the Recycle Bin.Next, go to C:\Users\Default. In the right side pane, right click the Desktop Folder and select Copy.Go back to your account name, right click your name in the left side pane and select Paste. This should replace that corrupted Desktopfolder with a known good copy.Let us know the results.Thank You for testing Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP

Hi Walter Excellent! I'm glad this worked. Let us know if you have more problems with this. Thank You for testing Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP LOL!!! IT's me again... Guess what???? They're back..... yep it happened again this morning. It's strange really. I turned on my laptop I logged in and there it was not the error message but a windows 98 looking desk top, the task bar was all grey with blank icons on it all seemed to struggle at least it looked like, Mind you the picture I have for my background is the same, so I proceeded to log off like I have been crossing my fingers hoping that the pretty side of my profile came up when I logged in.... I logged in again and there is was the pretty side of my profile, everything was all new and windows 7 like and all there. So it seems for some unkown reason I have one profile with multiple personalities I suppose, I don't get that error message like I did before so that was fixed but not sure why that happens, I am not sure if its something left over from Vista or what really. You know, I think if I do a clean install (wipe the drive clean and start from scrtach) it would almost be better, I decided not to do that and wait until the RTM come available, I just hate haveing to install all my programs again. Oh just to let you know so far all the programs I use for Various things work great if not better than vista, Though I did get the blue screenwhen I had 3 firefox browsers open,Picasa uploading pictures MSN messenger on Microsoft outlook email open and windows explorer open. Well if you have any other suggestion I am willing to try them, honestly I think that's the only quirk I have really run into I'd like to just log in and have all my stuff ready to go and not have to log in and be in this strange relm of windows 98... LOL! Thanks again for all your help Ronnie! :) Walter

You know, as a firm believer that all things are controlled through the registry and with that in mind, and you have been given some excellent advise to remedy your problem, but my experience with corrupted applications and files, lead me down the path of Registry optimizers, Especially the Windows Advance Care versions { Free and the Pro }. I keep my registry cleaned and aligned at 5 pm everyday and when I do check the scan results, I only have at an average 5 to 13 problems compared to other programs that are suppose to cure your registry problems. You will have consult some of the Moderators in getting answers about reemploying your old desk top via the C:/Windows.old file which was keep intact specifically in the RC Release for file and program restore. My Rc is running extremely well now, so I deleted my Windows.old file and gain 30GB's of space back to my drive that were once in use with my 7000 build beta 7 version. Good luck in getting your problem resolved and when you do, let all of us know the remedy, in the event we user's expeirence the same problem...JohnJohn Haskins

Hi Ronnie,Just wanted to let you know that what I have been having to do...When I log off of my screen it goes to where you would normally log in, well what I have been doing is logging off then going to the Red button on the bottom right to completely shut down... so the following day when I start up my computer I log in to my screen and my desktop and everything is there. ( no Windows 98 looking stuff) For some reason I cant jsut shut down I have to log off then shut down. So far the past few days I have been doing it that way with out any issues SO FAR ( Crossing Fingers everytime I boot up LOL!) I'll keep you posted if anything changes....As far as the rest of the system, not a problem speed is great everything loads as it should. Somtimes My Microsoft Money plus program loads a little slow but not really abnormal... Outlook sometimes takes a bit, but honestly it did the same in Vista.... That's about it really, i have been really hesitant in Using IE8... some times it take a bit to load...and crashes, I know it did last night a few times I normally uses Fire fox it's much faster and I never have any problems... Firefox is set as my default browser right now... I'll have to play with IE 8 a little further to see if I like or even works with m browsing...Anyhow there is my update so far, I''LL let you know if anything else comes up.Thanks for Reading and helping! It's always appreciated..
