Where is the Windows 8 Pro 64-bit ISO download?

Normal tech support has yet to answer this problem.  I purchased the $39.99 Windows 8 Pro download, and ran the upgrade on my Windows XP Home Edition (which is 32-bit OS, by design) machine.  The machine is fully capable of a 64-bit OS (in fact, I have a dual boot with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit running in a separate partition).  When I finished the Windows 8 Pro install, it turned out to be the 32-bit version.  I discovered via the normal support forum that this is a limitation of the download installer - it chooses without user option the architecture based upon the older Windows version.

I called support and they first thought that the MS store could provide the 64-bit ISO download.  That didn't work - they're researching it, though.  I tried support again and this time the rep said the installer chooses the architecture based on what the machine is capable of running.  I respectfully disagreed, but that didn't solve my problem.

So, how can I get the 64-bit ISO download, without having to make an ADDITIONAL purchase of the retail DVD version?

We were not given the option to pick 64 bit. I assumed windows 8 Pro would be 64 bit by default. I would not have purchased this "upgrade" to my windows 7 pro if I knew I would be limited to a 32 bit version only.

My windows 7 license key sticker does not say if it's 32 or 64 bit, so I should be able to install either version. I can't install 64 bit windows 7 pro, and run upgrade adviser again without buying another windows 8 license because adviser does not let you download the ISO without buying a license first. It should have the option to enter a previously purchased win 8 pro license key.

UPGRADE ADVISER SHOULD GIVE THE USER THE OPTION TO SELECT 32 OR 64 BIT (forfeiting the ability to import accounts, settings, and apps accordingly) OR IT SHOULD DISPLAY CLEARLY THAT THE CORE ARCHITECTURE MODEL WILL NOT BE UPGRADED!!!!

Have same problem.  However after a little search and trial I found some tricks hope can solve this problem.

- Windows 8 Pro 32 bit can only be upgraded from windows 32 bit.

- Windows 8 Pro 64 bit can only be upgraded from windows 64 bit.

- In order to install windows 8 pro 64 bit from windows 32 bit you will need a boot media to do a clean install.  Below is the FAQ :

- After see all above facts,  and I do not want to buy additional DVD.  I try following tricks:

1. Clean install windows 7 Pro 64 bit (I have license for 32 bit and 64 bit)

2. Check the email confirmation when bought windows 8 pro online.  There must a link to download with wording :

"This is your receipt - make sure to print or save a copy for your records.

If you need to download Windows, write down your new product key and enter it here"

3. After Download Winndows8-setup.exe, run it, and fill the product key number, and so on.

Update:  This time when I called tech support, the rep eventually admitted that this is a known limitation, and sometime soon (she wouldn't commit to a date estimate) Microsoft will make a link available for the 64-bit ISO, for those who purchased the download version of Windows 8 Pro.  This is ridiculous for a company of the caliber of Microsoft.  No wonder so many have switched to open source or Mac OS.  I keep Windows around mainly for apps not supported on Linux.

It seems all ISOs are already up at Microsoft's MSDN Subscriber site (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/securedownloads/hh442898#searchTerm=&ProductFamilyId=481&Languages=en&Architectures=x64&ProductFamilyIds=481&FileExtensions=.iso&PageSize=10&PageIndex=0&FileId=0), those are not available for download by everyone though. I was expecting a link to the ISOs in the confirmation mail or at least an option in the 'Upgrade Assistant' that would allow us to choose what we actually want downloaded.

This approach is fine for those with a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or earlier available.  I only have Windows XP Home Edition, and a Vista license from a laptop that has since been reloaded with Ubuntu (but no Vista media).  So I'll need the 64-bit ISO or a more configurable Windows 8 setup program smart enough to recognize the hardware supports a 64-bit OS.

So here's another thought...would the Upgrade Assistant work on a machine that has the 64-bit Windows 8 Release Candidate or Customer Preview?  If so, it should then load the Windows 8 Pro 64-bit.

jdigiovanni - that is precisely my question. in general on the internet (and strangely) there don't seem to be too many people talking about this scenario. I'm running the 64-bit version of the Windows 8 Release Preview (build 8400). I'm surprised at how few people are talking about upgrading from this to the final purchased live version.

I have purchased a key for updating to the final Windows 8 Pro but nowhere along the process was there a choice to make between 64 bit and 32 bit. Hey Microsoft, WTF?

Would love to hear more about this.

This is beyond ridiculous.

Microsoft has been preparing for the release of Windows 8 for over a year and they didn't even make sure they provide the correct version of the operating system, instead providing a version that most people would rather not install at all.  I imagine many of those people will  spend hours installing programs and modifying their configuration only later find that all that time is wasted on a version they don't want.  This is a clear case of a company not placing any value on their customer's time.

Unfortunately this isn't at all unusual for a company of the "caliber of Microsoft."

sory for late respond.  I confirm that trick work on my system.  Now I'm running on windows 8 pro 64 bit.  Also I able to copy the master copy of windows 8Pro 64 bit into my usb stick, and made a clean install again from usb stick.

My problem is other way. I made a purchase of upgrade from a Win7 64 bit system. But I wanted a 32bit ISO to install on a 32bit Vista system. If this was the case I would have done the upgrade from vista itself. Microsoft should at least provide an option to chose between 32 and 64 bit ISOs.

I attempted to get this problem resolved and entered the truly bizarre world of Microsoft "Support."

The Windows 8 support line took my information, repeatedly put me on hold and then transferred me to another department.    I was again asked for all my information, again put on hold repeatedly and then transferred to a third department.  I ended up with a recording saying my call couldn't be completed and was sent back to the 1st support department.

I spent the next 15 minutes again repeatedly being put on hold and I eventually asked for a supervisor who again wanted all my information.  At this point I had been on the phone with Microsoft for over an hour and had gotten nowhere so I asked for a refund.  The supervisor said she would process one asked me to go to a web page and click on a link that did not exist on that web page.  She spent the next 15 minutes putting me on hold and then returning to the call only to again insist I click on the non-existent link.

Eventually she figured out that there was a problem with Microsoft's web page and said I would get a call back within 48 hours.  72 hours later I had received no call.

I again called the Windows 8 support line.  After 20 minutes I was told that I was calling the wrong department (I had spent over an hour on the phone with them previously) and given another phone number.  I called the 2nd phone number and was given a 3rd phone number. When I called the 3rd number I was given the 1st number once again.

I had spent over 2 hours on the phone with various Microsoft departments and ended up literally right back where I started.  I ended up disputing the charge with my credit card company and contacting the Attorney General.

YOU CANNOT UPGRADE TO 64bit FROM 32bit or other way round. You have to install it separate. Even though the license sticker on your computer doesn't say whether it is 32bit or 64bit, once you activate either one of them, the product key is permanetly bind to that particular bit version. So, you cannot switch between them as you like. My opinion is to wait until retail versions are out if you really want to go for 64bit from exiating 32bit.

Where did you see that written?

When I bought win 8 pro there was no reference about 32bit or 64bit. It seems like they tricked all people to buy that software buying something they didn't know what it was. I believe there MUST be a fix to make a choise at the beginning of an installation except if there is an auto one when system see that there are more than 4gb of physical memory on system. Otherwise they cheated and MUST fix. Also PRO looks like a trick. It is not really a professional operating system since administrator privileges are restricted!! They must repair all these otherwise they cheated on people!!!

I think this could be more of a hardware issue it seems like its not understanding some systems are 64bit. From my understanding the ISO is supposed to be both 32 bit and 64 bit and can confirm this because I installed and I got 64 bit otherwise wouldn't have 16GB of RAM my system is very new though and also did BIOS update before installing Windows 8.

I'm not sure what determines if you get 32 bit or 64 bit but think its hardware processor maybe amount of RAM to because if you have 4GB of ram technically there is no difference from 32 bit to 64 bit like its not going to make your system run any faster. As for people with 4GB+ of RAM yea you need 64bit else even if you have 64GB it will just be seen as 4GB. For the fun of it how much ram do you have? interested to see if its based on amount of RAM in a system.

Hi I had a problem in that when I tried to download the ISO it said it was not avalable for download in my country/region (I am in the UK and it is available) so I downloaded it on my wifes Laptop, PROBLEM that is 32 Bit, anyway had to get refund (14 days allowed for that) for first download as I was told Key Code was for 32 Bit only and would not work with 64 Bit.

My problem it turns out was that I was running the Win 8 Enterprise 90 Day evaluation software, and this caused the (incorrect) error message, so I did a clean install of Win 7 64 Bit version BUT I did not enter keycode  or validate this install, I DO own a licence for this windows version (32 or 64 Bit) but actually wanted to upgrade another  (presently faulty) PC also  running a 64 Bit version of Windows 7, and so I was able to download a 64 Bit copy without any bother.

It seems that another way is just find a friend with a PC running the version 32 or 64 Bit that you wish to download, and order the download verion on their computer.

I can happily say that my experiance was the opposite they were freidly and helpfull told me I would need a refund as the 32 Bit Key Code would not work for a 64 Bit download ? rather odd as it was the same code for both 32 and 64 Bit versions discs when I installed Win 7, and they gave me a web link that took me to my purchase information and I had to Click on the refund link, the email regarding my rufund was in my inbox by the time I had completeed doing the required steps on the web link, the email also had a link for this same web siteI had visited as well. simple and painless, very stisfied with the helpline, OK so not being warned about it only going to download a software ISO etc. for the present 32 or 64 Bit operating system was annoying and while a well meaning idea to ensure a simple upgrade was flawed, but easy to get round.
November 3rd, 2012 3:48am

There was no reference because there are no two different license keys for 32bit and 64bit. One key for both 32bit and 64bit. But once you activate one of these versions, either 32bit or 64bit, the product key binds to that particular version. It's not an issue of Windows 8. It's same for earlier versions as well. And, there's no way you can do an in-place upgrade to 64bit from 32bit. If you want to use 64bit instead of 32bit, you have to do a clean installation.

Here's the latest I discovered, much to my disgust. I had requested refund for the $39.99 download version I had purchased, so that I could buy the Windows 8 Pro upgrade 32 and 64bit DVD version SKU 3UR-00001. Since this package includes separate DVDs - 32bit and 64bit - it turns out the 64bit setup will only run on a 64bit Windows machine!  I tried to fool the setup by starting the process with the 32bit DVD, and when it got to the install ready to start screen, I replaced the DVD with the 64bit version.  The install appeared to continue OK, but upon restart, pulled a fatal boot error.

I then tried booting directly from the 64bit DVD, but that pulled the same BSOD error.   I didn't see any way of producing an ISO from the DVD, but if anyone knows how, that may solve the problem.   Otherwise, I must conclude that the 64bit version simply isn't compatible with my machine - the same machine that flawlessly runs 64bit Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Way to go, Microsoft...Argh.

This really is a bizarre situation, I am running vista 32bit but want to install Win 8 64bit. The only way I can do this with a download is by actually paying for the software and then initiating the download from a friends 64bit laptop, then copying the ISO to my machine and running it. I cannot believe the MS have done this by accident! Is it so they sell more DVD's? I find that hard to believe, but I also find it hard to believe they could overlook such a fundamental requirement as allowing the user to select which version they want to download, come on Microsoft get it sorted or the uptake of this OS will be limited.

Yep, I wasted about 6 hours configuring my PC before I started to notice that 64 bit apps were not working.  Now I will have the joy of reinstalling everything from scratch.  That's if and when I can find a copy of the Windows 8 64 bit ISO.  So much for an "upgrade", I should have known better when microsoft offered a $40 upgrade.

I had the same problem, downloaded and used the product key then later found out it was the 32 bit that I installed on my pc. So I went to my laptop which was already running windows 7 64 bit operating system. Then went to windowsdotmicrosoftdotcom/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only. I used the same product key and downloaded the ISO, burned it to disc and did a fresh install on my pc. After it was done I checked it out and it actually worked.

It seems you have to be on a computer running a 64bit operating system when you download from microsoft because it automatically chooses it for you based on your current operating system. So your only option might be finding a trial version of some 64 bit operating system to use for the sole purpose of going to microsofts website for downloading the iso or go to a school or a library anywhere you can find a computer running 64bit just to download the iso.

November 12th, 2012 6:12am

I can confirm that reusing the same product key to redownload has worked for me, as long as you are using a 64bit computer for the download, you will obtain a 64bit iso.

I may be wrong but i thought in order to upgrade from 32 to 64 you must use a disk or drive and boot into it, because it changes the file system. you may be able to contact tech support for a new key, maybe even send a DVD, if you explain the situation. as for an ISO download, that may not go over well because of the opportunity to send it out to the wild allowing people to hack and crack it, which will happen anyways.

Happy to report that I've finally got 64bit Windows 8 running on my machine. It was a long, rocky road (and I'm still restoring some data from a clobbered partition...lesson learned - be very careful using the diskpart command!). I had to turn off the hardware overclocking button on my MSI mb to get rid of the BSOD during install. I also had to rearrange partitions (I have dual boot with Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS) to give Windows 8 the first partition on the drive. Then things finally worked. The tradeoff - VERY painful upgrade process for a much better version of Windows. At least my last contact with MS tech support was much more helpful than all prior calls.

Oh I wish! I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, 6GB RAM. The ISO I downloaded is 32-bit. There's nothing weird about the computer - no 32-bit OS in it anywhere, never has been, I went through the procedure exactly as advised. The only suggested solution I can find is 'try again'! And fork out another 25 on the off chance Microsoft's code will work this time? I don't think so. I'm trying to find out if the backup disk will have the 64 bit version - mean time I have a horrible feeling that my key is now welded to 32 bit. REALLY bad practice, Microsoft. The process is "We will decide whether you get 32 or 64, we won't tell you which we're giving you, and we've been getting it wrong for lots of people for months. As soon as you attempt to install it, it will be activated, so if we got it wrong for you, hard luck."

I took the first option to burn a copy of Window 8 from the website to only run to this problem and  error on a laptop running 64 bit XP and it would not let me install it from CD. So I followed these instructions by the numbers and they worked fine.

1. Clean install windows XP or 7  64 bit   2. From the email confirmation windows 8 pro online. click on link to download with wording :.."This is your receipt - make sure to print or save a copy for your records. If you need to download Windows, write down your new product key and enter it here" 3. After Download Windows8-setup.exe, run it, and fill the product key number, and so on.

I have to add that you must use a clean USB stick, thumb, or pin drive at least 4 GIG will do the trick. You may have to set the BIOS or boot default to boot off of USD drive.  I did a clean install from XP to WIN 8.
