Where is Add/Remove Snap-in option in Vista Home Premium?
OK....after fightning through the AIM 6.5 / Server execution error thing, and using the command-line fix for that, I decided to see if I could come up with a fix for any of the security concerns that have been posted here. So to start, I wanted to look at what available groups were pre-configured in Vista Home Premium. Only, no Local Users and Groups show up in MMC. I can see them under a command line, so I know Localgroup exists and is functioning. Common wisdom says click on "file" -> "add/remove snap-in" and add the local users and groups module. Problem is, Add/Remove Snap-In is not in the menu in my MMC. Is this another "Home Premium/Safe Mode/Administrator" thing? Anybody? Bueller? Bueller?....... I'm one step closer to the local apple store. But I know.....as soon as I buy one, a new Apple Certification program will start up, and I won't be able to get a job without one.......

Hi, Thank you for your post. You can run " lusrmgr.msc" to open the "Local Users and Groups" MMC directly. Hope it helps. Thanks! Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

Joson, Attempting to use this in Home premium throws an error claiming that the snapin is not allowed with this version of Windows. Very disappointing, as there is at leats one feature (home folder) that is not available thru the control panel. -Farboo

Thanks for replying Joson, but I finally found out the same thing Farboo did......you're just not "allowed" to have such "advanced" controls in Home Premium. Guess those of us with machines pre-loaded are deemed too stupid to deserve this kind of technology......or if we are smart enough to use it, we would be making enough money that buying the upgrade to pro ultimate wouldn't bother us. Damn.....and here I am as a lowly tech supporting Microsnot products. Vista is such a trainwreck, it's going to make Windows/ME look like a classic piece of quality software engineering. Gool luck to everyone who is going to be forced into using this mess.

Hi all, Yes, the Local Users and Groups snap-in is not available in Windows Vista Home Edition. I apologize for my careless. However, we can use User Account tool in Control Panel to manage user account for Windows Vista Home Edition computers. As Windows Vista Ultimate, we can also use net user command to check the attribute for a specific account, create and modify user accounts on the Windows Vista Home Edition computers. Regarding fixer64s question Add/Remove Snap-In is not in the menu in my MMC, you should see Add/Remove Snap-in after clicking File in the mmc window. If you do not see it, please press Ctrl + M in the mmc window to check the result. If the issue persists, please capture a screenshot for further research. Hope it helps. Come on now, how else will MS make money? They allow you to install IIS, have .NET framework installed so you can develop .NET applications even monitor system events, but you cannot manage local users and groups like we used. That just makes perfect sense!!. Youneed to pay for it. Its like when I go to my local lake for para-sailing and the guy says "Sir we take you up for free but you need to pay $40 to bring you down" I'm going to call MS support and complain about it, just for fun and *** about it, By the way, type"control userpasswords2" on the command prompt andyou may getmore options. Check out the properties for selected user and group membership tab. Also if you look at properties of a folder in Windows explorer and then go to securtiy tab and then try to search for all users you will see more users like IIS guest users. Good Luck. AniM

I came up with a better idea......I went back to XP. If I could run Linux on this laptop.....

You can run linux on that laptop. Just download it at ubuntu.com and make a bootable cd.Then just boot it from that cd and follow directions. If you want to run linux AND windows make a 10gb and a 2gb partition, then boot the CD!!

If you Launch the generic management console by running MMC.EXE, it DOES have the "add snap-in" choice on the file menu. However, you still cannot use the "Local Users and Groups" snap-in, because when you select to add it, even telling it to connect to another computer, it responds "This computer is running WINDOWS_LONG. This snapin may not be used with this version of Windows. To manage user accounts for this computer, use the User Accounts tool in Control Panel."Instead of using the console, you should be able to list / add / remove Groups and Users (to/from groups) using the NET USER and NET LOCALGROUP commands. For example, to add a user, then add them to a group, do this, after "Run As Administrator" a Command Prompt:NET USER /ADD usernameNET LOCALGROUP administrators /ADD usernameFor more detail, see this page: http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1985195&SiteID=17and this pagehttp://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/14478/netexe-reference.html

On my Microsoft®Windows®Vista™ Home Premium, I used a CMD.exe prompt as administrator, and, add and delete group(s) and user(s) in group(s)...
