Where do I find Microsoft's documentation of Windows 7 restriction for access/permissions on C:\ (root of the system drive)
Dear forum, I know that Windows 7 restricts permissions on C:\ quite intensively, and that a user (even when member of the local Administrators group) can not save (create/copy) a file directly into C:\. However, I am unsuccessful when trying to find Microsoft's documentation (e.g. a KB entry or other online) of Windows 7 restriction for access/permissions on C:\ Can you refer me to such documentation please? I am not interested in finding out "how to save to C:\" (I can figure that out), but entirely interested in the documentation. Kind regards, Soren

No, Administrators are still able to write to C:\. Remember, when you are using the UAC, you don't have administrator rights! In this case you have standard user rights (filtered token)! The rest is the same like starting with Windows NT. Only the power user group is no longer used (starting with Vista)."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

As I already said, there are no special Windows 7 restrictions. I works the same why as it did in NT. Starting with Vista you have to remind 2 things. 1. Power Groups is no longer used 2. With UAC you have standard user rights So if you want to have user to be able to write to a folder, give the user group writing permissions."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

Dear Andre, besides I don't agree Windows 7 works the same way as NT when it comes to permissions on C:, please can you refer me to the Microsoft documentation of the Windows 7 restriction for access/permissions on C:\ (root of the system drive)? Kind regards, Soren

Hi Soren, I think it doesn't make sense to answer you. You simply have no knowledge about Windows Nt and the right management. Start learning the basics. I've already answered your qesution twice. YOU WERE NEVER ABLE TO WRITE TO C:\ WITH STANDARD USER RIGHTS! Sorry, I'm no longer wasting my time telling you the same over and over gain. Dear Andre, that was a unfair reply! First of all - you do not once answer my simple question "Where do I find Microsoft's documentation of Windows 7 restriction for access/permissions on C:\ (root of the system drive)?", secondly I am very sorry to tell you that you're entirely wrong about my knowledge about Windows NT and later Windows flavours. I am wondering where in my question/responses you find that I am claiming anything about standard user being able to write to C:\ (which by the way was possible in NT3.52, 4.0 etc.) - I'm not at all interested therein! Windows 7 (as Windows Server 2008) definately restricts permissions on the root of the system drive, so e.g. even members of the local Administrators group cannot write thereto. This is e.g. also seen by the lack of "New > File" in the context menu. I perfectly know all the ways around the permissions to circumvent there, but that is not my interest. All I am looking for, is the MICROSOFT DOCUMENTATION that details the restrictions - nothing more, nothing less! Kind regards, Soren

My answer is not unfair. You simply don't listen. You post the same question over and over again because you don't understand the UAC . Read about it more here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2007.06.uac.aspx Summary: With UAC users from the administrator group have STANDARD USER RIGHTS ! Was this clear enough? Standard user rights!!!!!! And such user where NEVER able to write to C:\ . This is no restriction from Windows 7. Sorry, that it sounds hard to you, but your must learn the simple basics first! This is my last reply, I answered it over and over again. I'm no longer wasting my time with telling you the answer every time again."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

Hi Soren, do you now understand how UAC is working and that the same security mechanism apply to Windows 7? André"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/
