When logging in to PC server, laptop receives Credentials Didn't Work error
New Toshiba Portege has W7 Home pre-installed. When I try to log in to my W7 Pro PC I use as a server, error message says Credentials Didn't Work. Have re re re verified credentials. No problem logging in over LAN with W XP machines or with previous Toshiba running W7 Home. Over the internet XP machines, previous W7 Home Toshiba and other people can log in to server or access other laptops on my LAN but cannot access Portege. Remote Assistance enabled, all settings verified. Only clue is dialog box in Computer>Properties>Remote settings. Remote tab on other machines shows two boxes: Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop. Portege lacks entire Remote Desktop dialog box. Lower half of screen is just blank. Is that the problem? How do I repair this? Thanks for your help.

Hi, And according to your description, I suggest to perform these tests on Portege to troubleshoot the issue: 1 Logon with Clean Boot 2 Temporary disable firewall and antivirus programs 3 Check the service "Remote Desktop Service (TermService)" is set to automatic and currently running. 4 Go to Windows 7 Credential and check if any incorrect credential on PC. Hope that helps. Regards, Leo Huang Leo Huang TechNet Community Support

Hi Leo, Thanks for trying but we've already done all that. My IT Pro says we need to concentrate on the missing dialog box. Right click on Computer>Properties>Remote settings. The box that comes up shows several tabs. Remote tab on every other machine we have ever seen shows Remote Assistance in the top half and Remote Desktop on the bottom half. This Portege does not have Remote Desktop dialog box. Lower half of box is just blank. Logging in to the PC I use as a server is essential for me to do my work. Is there a way to download a patch or repair this? Is it a W7 defect or something on the Toshiba itself? The machine is supposed to have this function--I asked Toshiba. Thanks again, Lillian

Hmmm... are you trying to enable remote desktop connections on the w7 home system? if thats the case that's why your are not seeing the RDP check boxes, RDP is not available in home edition. that feature requires pro edition or higher.

Home edition can't be used as the computer to log into but can be used as the computer logging in to the server PC which has W7 Pro on it. As I said, my last laptop had W7 Home, it had the complete dialog box, and it logged into the Pro server just fine. Thanks for trying, please stay with me.

Hi, Try to create another administrator account and login to check if the same issue occurs. If the issue persists, you can also try to perform an in-place upgrade for test: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2255099 Hope that helps. Regards, Leo Huang Leo Huang TechNet Community Support

Hi Bill, I do not have software to capture screenshots. I took the laptop back and exchanged it. The new one logs on just fine. I still know know what the problem was, but I am in business now so I'll move on. Thanks for trying to help.

Hi Leo, I wish I had seen your post before I took the laptop back and exchanged it. Creating another acct would have been an interesting diagnostic tool. Oh well, the new laptop works just fine. I really appreciate your time and effort.
