When logged onto a Windows 2000 domain a Vista PC suddenly thinks it's logged on as another user
Okay, this is a really odd one. We have a Windows Vista Business PC, up to date on service packs which is a member of a Windows 2000 domain. I know 2000 isn't supported and we are trying to get the system upgraded, but it's not happening yet. The domain controller is updated as far as it can be. The user logs onto the PC and happily works with their network drives. Then completely at random they start getting access denied if they try to access their own user folder on the server. Checking on the server to see active sessions you can see that the PC is showing as logged on by a different user! The actual user is still logged on and there's only one session running. To prove that the server thinks they are now somebody else they can access the user folder of the wrong user, which is not the best security situation I've ever seen. The user it switches over to has never even logged onto the PC, there's no Users folder in that name. I hope I explained that okay, let me know if I need to clarify anything. Does anyone have any idea? I can't see any logic to this at all. Thanks in advance. Cheers, Neil

Hi, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums. When you say randomly, do you mean it works sometime? Can you reproduce it on other users or PCs? Your stored credentials might be corrupted. The Credential Manager allows you to remove specific credentials that you no longer want to be stored in the Windows Vault. To remove Windows Vault, follow the steps below: a. Click “Start’, type “Credential Manager” in the Start search box and hit enter. b. In the left pane, click “Manage your credentials”. c. Click the vault that contains the credential that you want to remove. d. Click the credential that you want to remove, and then click “Remove from vault”. Please refer to Remove stored passwords, certificates, and other credentials. Meanwhile, can you reproduce this behavior on every credential required website or only ASP.NET (3.5) site. If you want to get rid of all your stored credentials you can simply delete the encrypted files in these locations: in c:\users\[UserName]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Credentials Best Regards Magon Liu TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. Hi, When I say randomly I mean it will work fine from the moment they log on until the issue occurs, which will be after a seemingly random amount of time. It is only happening on the one PC and I have no idea how to go about reproducing it since I can't even say what situation I'd need to reproduce. I shall try the credentials and see if that helps at all. Thanks for the suggestion, Regards, Neil

Hi, Sorry I didn't update sooner, I checked the PC and it did indeed have an erroneous entry in Credential Manager. Removing it seems to have sorted it, although I have no idea how it got there in the first place. Cheers, Neil
