I am having the same/similar problem. I have tried to turn on the computer while the device is plugged in, but will try that. This started happening to me after I had to reformat my hard drive using the recovery discs. I am using a laptop, Compaq Presario V5115US. When plugging in my usb optical mouse (by Dell) the computer doesn't lock up, but it does pop up and say that the USB device has malfunctioned. When I have plugged in my printer to reinstall the drivers, the PC locks up and I have to power down using the off button (can't shut down through windows). The same thing has happened when trying to plug in a USB Flash Drive. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!Paul

Are any devices malfunctioning? Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information. Open Components under System Summary and click on Problem Devices. Is anything listed there? Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties, Hardware, and Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code? http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00035553&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=1841909&tmp_track_link=ot_search http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00042629&tmp_track_link=ot_recdoc/c00035553/en_us/c00042629/loc:3&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=1841909#N99 Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell
