When I try to analyze or defragment my hard drive the defragmenter will not run.
I have been running Windows XP Pro on my computer for about 2 years and the defragmenter has always worked fine.At first a window would pop up about the drive being scheduled for a scan by chkdsk and I got the disk clean and now the message is the disk defragmenter will not start whether I try to analyze or defragment.I am running a little over %50 capacity on my drive right now so capacity shouldn't be an issue.I would really appreciate some direction.2 people need an answerI do too

Hello danielhq Is chkdsk still trying to run?If so from a command prompt window (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt) At the prompt type CHKNTFS /D (there is a space before /) Enter Reboot Chkdsk will run again, but hopefully that will be the last time it does so. .

I believe that when I did get chkdsk to run it stopped because the error window message changed from the chkdsk running to the defragmenter could not start.Even though I tired the command in command prompt and the computer accepted it and there was no response in that window but after reboot it is still the same with the same message ; defragmenter could not start .Also it will not let me restore to a point before this started.

Try the following Start/Run and type inregsvr32 dfrgsnap.dllOK Then do the same withregsvr32 dfrgui.dllOK If it still will not run Using Windows Explorer browse to your windows\inf folder. In there you will find a file called dfrg.inf Right click this file, and select Install.

I type in both commands and they were successful according to my computer but still no luck.I have attempted the last suggestion but I cannot figure out what you mean by browse to your inf folder.I have typed this in the browser with no luck. How exactly do I access the inf folder?

Sorry, I think inf is a “hidden” file. You will have to make it visible as follows 1. Double-click on the My Computer icon. 2. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. 3. After the new window appears select the View tab. 4. Put a check at “Display the contents of system folders”. 5. Under the Hidden files and folders section check “Show hidden files and folders”. 6. Remove the check from “Hide protected operating system files”. Ignore the warning message 7. Press the Apply button and then the OK button Then go to C:\Windows\inf
