I have quite a few available restore points so I can go back as far as the 8th of May. I'll do that if no other suggestions can fix this.
I'm currently running sfc /scannow to see if it finds anything.
Edit : sfc completed, no indication it fixed anything but now it's working! Any chance sfc now creates a log file? Sure would be nice.

Hi Ztruker,
Please first access
Clean Boot to check the issue. If the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, you can continue to narrow down which entry is causing the issue.
Also, if you installed any software recently, temporary uninstall it to check the result.
If the issue still exists, go to Start, type %windir%\System32 in the Start Search box. In the System32 folder, search for *.cpl in this folder. Double click each
*.cpl file and see if the culprit can be found.

Sounds kind of like you may have had an infected file? What AV/AS software are you running? I would recommend doing a scan with both HJT, and MBAM
HJT: http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html
MBAM: http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?tag=mncol
Just for kicks, you should post your HJT log here when you are done, we might be able to keep this from happening again :-)

Hi,
please install the stability update KB980408 it resolves the issue which was fixed by hotfix (KB978433). This update should fix the crash of the explorer.
If it doesn't fix the issue, please download this reg file from my SkyDrive:
http://cid-128fc518635be2dc.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/MS%20Foren/Registry/WER%5E_Explorer.reg
and make a double click on the file to import it.
When the explorer crashes, Windows Error Reporting Service (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb787181%28VS.85%29.aspx) creates a dmp file under C:\Localdumps. Please upload the file to your public Skydrive folder and post the link here. I take at the
dump, maybe I can see the cause.
