When I boot my PC, I cannot type my login password on PS/2 keyboard but I can on screen
Hello, There are many threads on this topic but not exactly the same and I can't use the info to repare simply except with a Windows Repair, which seems a bit hard for such a small non blocking bug. Incident appeared as follow yesterday: In Office 2010 English, I noticed sandard Office styles in Dutch instead of English under 'custom' style category. I had just read an xls from a PC Office 2003 that could have been written by a Dutch speaking person. I wanted to get rid of the Dutch styles. I checked the Office languages in Office 2010. There was only English with a Belgian keyboard (correct), but also a US keyboard. I deleted the US keyboard entry. As Dutch styles where still there, and I did not know how to get rid of them (I thougth it was a language error), I bougth a French Office 2010 pack and loaded it. I still had my dutch styles which I deleted one by one. Office 2010 could work well in French (my mother tongue) or English (my father tongue). I switched back to English. I also fiddeld with the keyboard settings and "en passant" suppressed things annoying to me like "peek at desktop" because application windows on desktop would dissapear when the mouse pointer would move accross my 27" high definition screen. I tried many things to get rid of this (suppressed Aero, etc). There is no straigth help that tells you why it happens. After a reboot, when prompted with win 7 password, the keyboard did not seem to respond (any typing would have no visible effect). This is a systematic error, still occuring. I can bypass using the on-screen keyboard (ergonomy menu) to enter my pwd and all is fine until next Windows boot. Extra login security but not really nice. I checked several things: My keyboard is a connected directly to a PS/2 connector. I used a USB kb with exactly the same results. So, this tends to dismiss a keyboard error or a USB driver error as I have found a lot of entries on this issue with USB connectors. I used the Windows diag function, which did not find anything wrong. When Bios booting, the keyboard works fine (I can go in Bios menu and type whatever I like). After Windows takes the relay, the "num lock" led lights on again, then goes briefly off, then briefly on again before the Windows login is requested. All seems normal. The device manager shows no error. I went back in Windows safe mode to load previously known good configuration to no avail. Here below are the basic details of the PC. The PC operates always fine and is uptodate but I noticed perhaps strange things: In ergonomy settings, keyboard "render keyboard more easy to use" settings, the "activer les touches bascules" (I don't know the English translation may be "activate flip-flop or toggles keys") is set 'on') at each reboot while I always unset it (off) and apply my change. It comes back. It is as if a change in settings would not modify the registry for good. I had the problem with other keyboard settings (a sound at each key stroke could not be unset). After a quick scan, I could not see errors in the event log (appl or sys) related to this but I don't know what to look for. The system runs on a raid1 disk system. I did not notice disk problems, which could have jeopardise file integrity. Something looks corrupt. Should I restore (repair / reload) the system (usually the fastest safest option)? Is there a simple other manoeuvre to try before? Best regards, Paul

Hi, According your description, I suggest to perform these steps to troubleshoot the issue: 1 Reinstall Keyboard driver: Go to Device Manager, uninstall keyboard device, also delete hidden keyboard devices(View---Show hidden devices), then scan for hardware changes 2 Reinstall USB controllers in device manager 3 Add US keyboard in Region and Language If the issue persists, you can try to perform a system restore. Hope it helps. Regards, Leo HuangPlease remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi, Thanks, I just read your reply. I will implement in coming days. As an aditional note, I noticed that I can type in my password at login, provided that I type each character waiting/pressing down 3-4 seconds for each key, so if I type fast it does not work but if I type extremely slowly, it works. Strange. It is keyboard independent. I tried another PS2 kbd ( a 3rd one) this morning with identical results. Regards Paul A Taylor Brussels

Hi, I may be useful to some to know that this problem was solved by a complete Win 7 system reinstall, having tried everyhing else. Works fine now. Regards, Paul A Taylor Brussels

Thanks for posting a following answer. Since the computer has a PS\2 port, it is showing that it is somewhat dated hardware. Updating the BIOS and motherboard drivers for the chipset and controllers to the latest available would also be helpful. Good luck!
