What to Do When System is (occasionally) Low on Virtual Memory ??
Hello; 1) This laptop is quite outdated by today's standard, but it still has some life in it!....Compaq: Win XP Prof SP3....847 MHz, 128 MB of RAM....AMD Athlon x86 Processor....Total Physical Memory 128 MB....Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB....Hard Drive 20.GB, 50% free....Broadband Internet connection (for Windows automatic updates, anti-virus updates, etc.) 2) I use it occasionally for certain quick tasks, specially when the other laptops are running lengthy programs, and I feel more comfortable leaving them alone! The laptop in question has both 3.5" floppy drive and DVD, which makes it handy to run old (short) programs straight from the floppies without the need to copy them to a CD (or other medium) and run the programs on a faster m/c.(though I've done the transfer few times!) 3) Recently and occasionally, when I log-in {with no floppy or CD or any application (to my knowledge) running}, I get the following message:...."Windows - Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low.....Your system is low on virtual memory......Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file......During this process, memory requests for more applications may be denied."I do nothing. Just wait for the system to calm down (which takes awhile!), ignore few "system program non-responsive" error messages, and then restart the system. 4) My question is:a...Is there a practical (non-risky) way to increase theVirtual Memory on a given system (even on demand) ??b...Is VM a function of both the physical memory and system hardware, and unless either or both are upgraded one can do nothing about the VM ?? Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Monir 1 person got this answerI do too

Hello; 1) I've changed the Initial & MaximumVirtual Memory size to 2000 MB each, and ignored VM = 1.5*RAM.Subsequent system starts (so far) have not displayed the Windows message:"Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low"reported earlier in the OP. 2) Whether this is a temporary fix or the only solution under the circumstances (laptop not upgradeable), I'm not sure!I'd mark the question as answered for now, subject to further advice.
