What is the default gateway and interface if using a vpn?
Hello. I have set up a VPN with a friend to allow both of us to play on his game server, my vpn connection connects to his router (69.120.173.X). His VPN server assigns me this address25.50.75.127, his address is25.50.75.124. My NIC interface is 192.168.1.106. Im assuming I cannot connect to the game because my computer does not have a route in its routing table to find the way, ive been trying to add a route just to test my theory, but i dont know what interface address i should be using or gateway. Which interface should this data be exiting from to get to 25.50.75.127?.. Oh, and the vpn connection works, its just that i cant ping his local address, which means something must be wrong. something isnt getting somewhere, right?

You don't need a route to see machines across a VPN link. When you connect your routing table is changed so that your VPN interface becomes your default gateway.Do a route print to see what your default route is. The default route is 0.0.0.0 0.0.00 . If there is more than one, the one with the lowest metric is the active one. I would recommend that you get your friend to set up a static pool of addresses to use for VPN, not use DHCP. You should net be getting a public IP. What OS is running on the VPN server?Bill

Ohhhh I see, I had looked at his routing table and mine also, but just made me even more confused. What is On-Link? He is using Server 08 R2.

It would be easier to follow if the server was using a static pool of addresses (such as 192.168.99.1 to 192.168.99.10). You would then get a 192.168.99.x address and this IP would be your default gateway. (The default route using this IP would have a lower metric than the normal one using 192.168.1.1). If you can't get to the vpn server by name you can use its "VPN" Ip address. With the above setup that would be 192.168.99.1 because the server uses the first address in the pool for itself. The server will have a host route to the VPN client through the tunnel.Bill

Oh, I see, alright then! I'll see if that works. Thanks!
